Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who invented the aqualung?

Answer: Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Émile Gagnan

Although various other diving apparatus existed before the aqualung, this was the first self-contained, self-regulating unit on the market.
2. Which is the largest recreational diver training agency in the world?

Answer: PADI

Until the 1980's BSAC was the leading agency but as their training program would typically take 6 months it was not suitable for vacation diving courses. As a result PADI took over the leading position when they developed a modular training program that was very well suited to holiday divers.
3. What is the first independent diver certification level with PADI?

Answer: Open Water Diver

After the Open Water Diver Course is it is strongly recommended to continue your diving education with the Advanced Diver course and then the Rescue Diver course to develop your diving abilities and experience for increased safety and enjoyment. SCUBA diver is a beginner certification with reduced time commitment that does not qualify the holder for independent diving; it is similar to a learner's permit on the road.
4. What is the generally accepted maximum depth for recreational scuba diving?

Answer: 130ft (40 m)

Although it is possible to dive deeper on compressed air it is strongly recommended not to do so as the risks increase exponentially with depth.
5. What are the bends?

Answer: Decompression sickness

Decompression sickness occurs when the pressurized dissolved nitrogen gas in your tissue is not allowed sufficient time to escape as the pressure drops during ascent.
The risk of decompression sickness is always a function of depth, time and ascent rate.
Simply put, the bends are caused by diving too long, diving too deep, coming up too fast or a combination of all three.
6. What is the "Rapture of the Deep"?

Answer: Nitrogen Narcosis

Breathing nitrogen under pressure produces an narcotic effect known as nitrogen narcosis. Most divers experience symptoms of nitrogen narcosis at depths greater than 100 feet, but symptoms may occur in depths as little as 33 feet. Divers that dive to depths of 100 feet plus on a regular basis tend to be less affected than divers who are not used to this.

Ascent reverses the symptoms of nitrogen narcosis. Factors that increase the risk of narcosis include cold temperatures, rapid descent, anxiety, alcohol, sedatives, fatigue, and carbon dioxide excess.

Symptoms include light-headedness, inattention, difficulty concentrating, poor judgment, anxiety, decreased coordination and hallucinations
7. What is the name of the British diver training agency?

Answer: British Sub Aqua Club or BSAC

The BSAC has been involved in scuba diver training since 1953 and was recognized as the official training agency in the UK in 1954. The training standards set by the BSAC were subsequently adopted by national training agencies worldwide. In the 1980s PADI developed easier training methods that were better suited to holiday destinations and took over as the leading diving training agency.
8. What areas in the world are favorite for recreational scuba diving?

Answer: Tropical reefs

Although diving takes place almost anywhere where there is water tropical reefs are by far the favorite locations. On tropical reefs you will find marine life variety and visibility that not matched by any other location
9. Why is it advisable to always wear a wetsuit, even in warm tropical waters?

Answer: To prevent heat loss and protect against jellyfish stings

Water conducts heat much better than air so even if the difference in temperature between the water and your body is small you can still have serious heat loss (hypothermia) over a relatively short period of time. Also, a wetsuit will protect you against jellyfish stings with risks that can range between uncomfortable or painful to fatal.
10. Why should you always take a recognized certification course before you go scuba diving?

Answer: Because scuba diving is potentially very dangerous so for your own safety you must be well trained

Scuba diving is best described as very safe but also very unforgiving. If you are well trained and follow the rules you have learned during that training course then scuba diving is very safe. However, if you go diving without knowing what you are doing there are numerous ways to get killed very quickly indeed.
