Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which three dolls were the first created?

Answer: Kirsten, Molly and Samantha

The American Girl dolls were created by Pleasant Rowland in 1986. The company was then called "Pleasant Company". In 1998, however, Pleasant Company was sold to Mattel, who marketed everything as "made by American Girl" instead of the original "made by Pleasant Company".
2. Where did the first American Girl Place open up?

Answer: Chicago, Illinois

Pleasant Rowland created American Girl as an alternative to Barbies. Instead of skimpy clothes and boyfriend dolls, Rowland wanted to give girls something enriching. In 1990, the first American Girl Place opened, where a girl could go to buy doll things, get her and her doll's hair done, see a show, have a fancy tea party, and more! The American Girl Place in New York followed in 2006, with the American Girl Place in Los Angeles opening in 2007.
3. When was Josefina introduced into The American Girl Collection?

Answer: Between Addy and Kit

The American Girl dolls in the American Girl Collection were released in this order; Kirsten, Samantha and Molly (1986), Felicity(1991), Addy (1993), Josefina (1997), Kit (2000), Kaya (2002), and Julie (2008).

The "best friend" dolls were released in this order; Nellie (2004), Elizabeth (2005), Emily (2006), Ruthie (2008), and Ivy (2008).
4. Which American Girl was made an "online exclusive" in 2002 before making a catalog comeback in 2005?

Answer: Felicity

Felicity was retired because American Girl wanted to make room for more dolls in the collection, to many fans' disappointment. But surprisingly, Felicity was returned to the collection in 2005, due to a movie being made on her. She returned with a new "meet" dress, her old "meet" dress becoming her "Rose Garden" dress.

In 2008, it was announced that Samantha and her collection would be retired. That caused quite an outrage amongst American Girl's biggest fans, some threatening to boycott the company for their decisions.
5. How old are the American Girl characters in the beginning of their books?

Answer: Nine

Each American Girl is nine-years-old at the start of the book. They normally have a birthday celebration in their fourth book, often called "Happy Birthday, (character name)!". All dolls in the American Girl Collection have their birthdays set in springtime - Samantha and I share a birthday; however, she was born long before I was!
6. Who was the first doll to have freckles?

Answer: Kit

When Kit was released in 2000, fans were pleasantly surprised; not only did she have short, chin-length hair, but she also had freckles sprinkled over her nose and cheeks.

When Kirsten was released in 1986, she had the same model wig as Samantha and Molly; long with bangs. However, in Kirsten's time, girls did not usually have bangs, so the doll's wig is historically inaccurate, but beautiful nevertheless.
7. Which one of these authors wrote all six of Felicity's books?

Answer: Valerie Tripp

Valerie Tripp not only wrote all six of Felicity's books, she also wrote Samantha's, Molly's, and Kit's, plus some of their short stories and other odds and ends. Valerie Tripp is best known for writing for American Girl. She was born in 1951.
8. The "Just Like You Dolls" were originally called what?

Answer: "American Girls of Today"

"The American Girls of Today" dolls were dolls that, true to their new name, could be customized to look exactly like you, if you wished. The dolls could have different skin tones, different colored eyes, different colored hair... if you ordered an African-American doll, your doll's hair would even get a different texture (due to most African-Americans typically having rougher and more fragile hair than Caucasians) When invented, the dolls all had long straight hair, though all of that began changing in about 2007.
9. What was the name of the third American Girl of the Year?

Answer: Marisol

The idea of having "American Girl of the Year" took off in 2002 with the creation of Lindsey. The red haired doll was put on the market on January 1st, 2002 - but only for one year! After that, she would be put into retirement, never to be sold on the mainstream market again. However, another "American Girl of the Year" would take her place, and so on, and so on. However, American Girl took a gap year in 2003 and did not release an American Girl of the Year, due to poor sales of the Lindsey doll.

The "American Girl of the Year" dolls were released in this order; Lindsey (2002), Kailey (2004), Marisol (2005), Jess (2006), Nicki (2007)and Mia (2008).
10. Who directed "Molly: An American Girl on the Homefront"?

Answer: Joyce Chopra

The third American Girl film to be made was directed by Joyce Chopra (Nadia Tass directed the first two). The film starred Maya Ritter, Molly Ringwald, Tory Green, and David Aaron Baker. It was filmed in Toronto, Ontario.
