Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ty never actually started his billion-dollar business with Beanie Babies. When he first made Beanie Babies, he made a group of nine animals to introduce the collection. Which of these is not one of the 'Original 9'?

Answer: Quackers the Duck

The first nine Beanies include Chocolate the Moose, Spot the Dog, Patti the Platypus, Cubbie the Bear (originally named Brownie), Flash the Dolphin, Pinchers the Lobster (originally named Punchers), Legs the Frog, Squealers the Pig, and Splash the Whale.

Although Ty began with these nine animals, the number raised to nearly fifty different Beanie Babies within a year. How did he sell so many? Ty limited his products and sold them primarily to small gift shops rather than large chain stores. All of the original nine Beanies were retired by midnight on Dec. 31st, 2000.
2. In 1998, Ty released a new Beanie in remembrance of Princess Diana who passed away less than a year earlier. What was the name of this bear?

Answer: Princess

The bear was coloured purple to symbolize royalty and it featured a rose over its heart. Using this Beanie Baby, Ty has single-handedly donated more than ten million dollars to the Princess Di Foundation after Princess Di has passed on. Over the years, Ty has also supported many other charities through Beanie Babies. Ariel the Bear supported money for the Pediatric AIDS Foundation shortly after Ty created Princess.

Another famous charity bear was Issy, who came in more than fifty different versions.

After the terrorist attacks, Ty also donated money through a certain series of bears and dogs. Ty's Breast Cancer Foundation bear, Cure, was one of the most famous charity bears that Ty has released. 100% of all profits were donated to charity.
3. Over the years, Ty has released many bears representing different countries. Which is not a national bear?

Answer: Ozzie (for Australia)

Some bears representing Australia have been Aussiebear, Australia, Hero (Australia), Koowee, Mum, Starry, Ocker, and Wattlie. The Celebration Bear was an Australia, UK, New Zealand, and Canada exclusive because it celebrated the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002. Over the years, the US and Canada have gotten the most country-exclusive bears. Canada has had a bear released for every province as well as some other animals, and the states have had many national Beanies.

These are usually shown with a little flag emblem on the animal's heart or arm.
4. Ty creates the Teenie Beanie line as toys for what fast food chain?

Answer: McDonald's

The McDonald's/Ty Teenie Beanie promotion began in 1997, and each year that it has occurred, it has been one of the most popular Happy Meal toy lines ever. After four straight years, the Teenie Beanie promotions stopped. They returned again in 2004 for the 25th anniversary of the Happy Meal.

In this fifth line-up, all of the Teenie Beanies were bears and they represented different McDonald's symbols. These include: The Golden Arches Bear, the Ronald McDonald Bear, the Hamburglar Bear, and the Grimace Bear.
5. What was not a staff exclusive Beanie Baby that was released?

Answer: 2005 Signature Bear

The #1 Bear was a solid red bear with a #1 on its chest. These were only given out to Ty sales representatives for their awesome work in 1998. It is perhaps one of the rarest, most sought-after Beanie Babies because only 253 were made. Over the years, Billionaires Bears have been very rare as well. Ty releases Billionaire Bears and gives them to Ty employees.

The first one was given for more than a billion dollars of sales after 1998, the third was given after the openings of Ty Singapore, Ty Malaysia, and Ty India, and the seventh was covered in a pattern bursting fireworks. Ty has more than eight Billionaire Bears released. Signature Bears were simply released every year (beginning in 1999) by Ty much like the Holiday Bears (which began releasing in 1997).
6. In 1999, Ty announced that he would be retiring all of his Beanie Babies, and therefore, all production would end. What was the name of the proposed final beanie of the millennium?

Answer: The End

In the end of 1999, Ty actually did cease production on all of his Ty products and released a black bear with the words "The End" written on it. On the Ty official site, www.ty.com, Ty had a poll asking whether Beanie production should resume, and since the business was booming at that time, it was brought back. What'd they do? Ty decided to release a new bear called "The Beginning" and Beanie Baby production restarted. Ty ended up creating new Beanies with new styles and fabrics after this.
7. In the end of the twentieth century, Ty began the BBOC (Beanie Baby Official Club). What was the original Beanie Baby that was given to members of the club?

Answer: Clubby

In the original Beanie Baby Club Kit, members would be able to get their gold membership card, sticker pages (which could be placed onto a poster that was also provided), and a mail-in slip that would get members a Clubby bear and a certificate. After these kits were extremely popular, Ty ran out of Clubby bears and couldn't supply them to buyers.

He retired the kit and brought out a new one featuring Clubby II. Since then, there have been more than 5 different versions of Clubby.
8. What was the name of 'The People's Beanie'?

Answer: Classy

In 2001, Ty created a contest. He would have the customers make the Beanie. He released nine different bears, each with a different name and style, and he had customers narrow it down to one ultimate Beanie. In the end, customers chose Classy, a blue bear in the usual style, and his poem.

The contest began in April 2001, ended about a month after, and the bear began selling online and in stores. Within a short time, the bear retired because it sold out.
9. In 1997-99, the Chicago Cubs held promotions on certain days where up to 10,000 spectators would get a Beanie. What Beanie was given away?

Answer: Cubbie

Cubbie, of the 'original nine', was usually given away to children under 13, and only 10,000 were given away on certain days during the season. Since they were given away with a commemorative card, many collectors see the new Cubbie as a completely different Beanie.

The promotion continued two years after Cubbie was retired in late 1997. Although Cubbie is probably the most popular example, many other Beanies have been given away at sports events. For example, Whisper the Deer was once given away during Milwaukee Bucks games and Aurora the Polar Bear was given away during Houston Astros' games in 2000.
10. In 2004, Ty officially released the first Beanie Babies based on fictional characters. Which was the first character to be released?

Answer: Garfield

In may 2004, Ty and Garfield teamed up to promote "Garfield: The Movie" which was set to release that summer. Ty produced six Beanie Babies on various characters in the movie. These included: Garfield, Odie, Nermal, Arlene, Louis, and Luca. Three months later, Ty released the Pooky Beanie Baby. Garfield's teddy bear was added to the collection, and shortly after this, Garfield and Pooky were also given Beanie Buddy forms. Two months after Pooky's release, Ty announced Spongebob Squarepants, Patrick, and Squidward.

After these also proved to be popular, Ty released Spongebob's pineapple home, Thumbs Up Spongebob, and Spongebob Tuxedopants Beanies in early 2005.
