Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What name is given to the hobby of stamp-collecting?

Answer: Philately

Vexillology is the study of flags, Phillumeny is matchbox-cover collecting and Philology is the study of languages.
2. What design was on the first stamp issued by the Commonwealth of Australia (1913)?

Answer: A kangaroo on a map of Australia

The Kangaroo issue was re-issued many times with the final issue appearing in 1945. King George made his appearance in a long-running issue in 1914. The 'Arms' series was released in 1950 and consisted of four high face-value stamps. Queen Victoria died in 1900 and was featured on many stamps issued by the individual states. (Australia was not proclaimed as a country until 1901.)
3. What is the name of the stamp issuing authority in Australia?

Answer: Australia Post

In 1975, Australia Post and Telstra (the phone company) were created from the division of the Postmaster-General's Department.
4. What colour is the 1932 5 Shilling Sydney Harbour Bridge issue?

Answer: Green

The centerpiece of any standard Australian collection. In 1932 five shillings was more than the average weekly wage, therefore this stamp is quite expensive to buy today.
5. What was the standard letter postage rate between February 1985 and August 1986?

Answer: 33 cents

Prior to this date the rate was 30c, and after August 1986 it rose to 36c.
6. To a stamp collector, what do the initials 'S.G.' mean?

Answer: Stanley Gibbons

Stanley Gibbons is a highly regarded British stamp catalogue with worldwide coverage. The other three are figments of my imagination.
7. Since 1979, an Australian stamp has been issued each April to celebrate which occasion?

Answer: Queen's Birthday

Rather confusing, because the Queen's birthday holiday is celebrated in June (September in Western Australia). Australia Day is also commemorated on a stamp, but this is issued in January.
8. Which of these stamps have factually incorrect designs?

Answer: all three

The Newcastle 150th was supposed to depict Lieutenant John Shortland (the city founder) but instead showed his father. The ABC stamp has the logo of the ABC reversed, and the lawn bowler is wearing shoes with a definite heel (not allowed in that sport).
9. Which country has NOT had a joint issue with Australia?

Answer: Egypt

USA and New Zealand both issued stamps for our Bicentennial in 1988, and China issued stamps in 1995 to celebrate a stamp Expo. Other countries that have shared issues include Great Britain, Sweden and USSR.
10. What is the face value of the highest denomination stamp issue?

Answer: $20

Issued in 1990, and depicted a painting of a garden.
