Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many squares does a queen control on a central square (d4, e4, d5 or e5)?

Answer: 27

The maximum number of squares the queen can control in the center is 27. That's a massive improvement over the original 4: Old rules only allowed the queen (often known as wazir in those times) to move diagonally 1 square.
2. On which of these squares does the king have the fewest number of moves available?

Answer: a8

The corners a1, a8, h1 and h8 are the places where the king has the fewest moves - 3 moves only. On any other edge square, the king has 5 moves and in the center, it has 8 moves.
3. What is the mark for "checkmate" in chess notes and books?

Answer: #

"#" is the mark for checkmate. "?" is for bad moves. "R" is for Rook. "!" is for good moves.
4. What is a requirement to give checkmate using a Rook and King on the edge (not corner) of the board?

Answer: The two kings stand side-by-side in a row or column with an empty square in the middle

When making a checkmate using a rook and king, the two kings are required to stand side-by-side in a column with a empty square in the middle, with the mating side's king on the third row or column and the one to be mated on the edge. If the defending king is in a corner, the attacking one can also be one square to the side (e.g. on c2 if mating on a1).
5. When you are giving checkmate using two rooks, you don't have to use the king.

Answer: True

When you give checkmate using 2 rooks (which will happen on an edge or in a corner), you don't have to use the king because the 2 rooks can control two rows alone.
6. What is the only time you can move a rook jump over the king?

Answer: When you castle

When you castle, you horizontally move the king 2 squares towards the rook and then the rook jumps over the king, taking its place next to the king.
7. There can be a maximum of 2 queens, 4 rooks, 4 knights and 4 bishops on the board.

Answer: False

It is possible that all eight pawns promote for both sides (after capturing some pieces). Thus, there could be up to 18 queens or 20 rooks, knights or bishops on the board at once.
8. What is the most common type of draw in tournament chess?

Answer: Agreed draw

An agreed draw happens when a player offers the opponent a draw and the opponent agrees because neither side sees a way to win.
9. In chess notation, what is the mark for extra-horrible moves?

Answer: ??

"??" is the mark for horrible moves. "!" is for good moves. "+" is for checks. "#" is for checkmates.
10. What letter is used for pawns in chess notation?

Answer: None

Pawns are not indicated with a letter. In chess notation, a pawn move is simply written by the destination square (e.g. e4) or, for a capture, the originating file and the destination square (e.g. exd5).
