Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which cards do you ultimately want to get the most of in the game "Dominion", and what do they represent?

Answer: Victory cards; land

Victory cards are cards with a certain value of Victory points, and can be bought with money. The three basic groups of Victory cards are Estates, which are worth one victory point, Duchies, worth three Victory points, and Provinces, valued at six Victory points. In the base game without any extension packs, "Dominion" contains 24 Estate cards, 12 Duchies, and 12 Provinces. The game also comes with 12 Victory cards called "Gardens" that also award points, but are not found in every game.

The goal of the game is to amass the most victory points, and Victory cards are the only way to do so. The game will end when all of the Province cards have been bought. However, Victory cards are only useful for the final count; when drawn as part of the hand, they do nothing but take up space, unless the player finds their presence in the deck gratifying and psychologically relaxing.
2. What distinctive feature of some card games was pioneered by "Dominion", earning it the nickname of a "deck-builder" game?

Answer: Used cards are kept for the player's reuse, instead of being turned in

"Dominion" was the first game to allow the players to reuse their own cards instead of turning them in once used. Other deck building games followed, such as some of the Ascension, Nightfall, Puzzle Strike, and Resident Evil card game series.

In "Dominion", each player is dealt a certain number of cards at the beginning which are placed in the player's personal Deck. Once a player finishes with a hand, the cards, used, just bought, and otherwise, are placed in the Discard pile. The player draws more cards from the Deck. Once the player's Deck is used up, the discarded cards are reshuffled into a new Deck. Thus, as the game progresses and cards are bought, but the currency not turned in, the player's deck keeps growing bigger.
3. With a hand consisting of five cards, how many cards is a player given as a starting deck?

Answer: 10

Each player needs ten cards, five for the first hand, then to be discarded, and five for the second hand, after which all the cards, along with any purchased cards, are reshuffled and used as the new deck.

In any "Dominion" game, the first ten cards are three Estate cards and seven Copper cards. Copper cards are the lowest of the currency cards and are worth one coin each. Thus, a player begins with three victory points, courtesy of the three Estate cards, and seven Copper coins, with which other cards can be bought.
4. "Dominion" has three phases of moves the player can do in one turn. Which phase, requiring kingdom cards for completion, is the first phase?

Answer: Action phase

In the Action phase, a player is allowed to play one Action card if they have one in their hand. If not, the player skips directly to the next phase. In the first two rounds, no player has an Action card, so the Action phase is skipped. If a player has more than one card in hand, only one can be used, unless the first Action card played awards the player another action. After the player completes all that the Action card dictates or allows, the Action phase ends.

Kingdom cards are a category of cards, most of which are Action cards. There are twenty-five groups, or piles, of Kingdom cards, and ten cards per group. Twenty-four of the groups consist of Action cards, the remaining "Garden" pile awards victory points. Each group has a name, price, and specific action. For example, the "Village" cards cost three coins and award one more card (so you can draw a sixth card for your hand) and two more actions. Other cards have different, set prices and combinations.
5. Treasure cards are needed to complete the second phase, which is what phase?

Answer: Buy phase

After the Action phase comes the Buy phase, when money, consisting of Treasure cards, comes into play. In the Buy phase a player can buy any of the cards in the piles used in the game, provided that the number of coins in the player's hand cover the price of the item purchased. The reason the Buy phase comes after the Action phase is that some Actions can grant coin for the Buy phase, and purchased Actions cannot be played in that turn.

There are three groups of Treasure cards, Coppers, worth one coin each, Silver cards, with a value of two coins, and Gold cards, amounting to three coins each.
6. In the final phase of a turn, the player discards their hand and draws new cards, so the final phase is named what?

Answer: Clean-up phase

In the third and final phase, a player discards a hand and draws five new cards. If the Deck does not have enough cards, it is necessary to shuffle the Discard pile and make it the new Deck. A player's Clean-up phase can happen while the next player has a turn.

However, if the next player uses an Action card that affects other players, Clean-up phases must be finished before the Action is resolved.
7. The only way the game can end is if all the Province cards are bought.

Answer: False

Although the sale of all the Province cards is one of the ways to end the game, there is a second way. If all the cards of any three piles are bought, the game also ends. So, the game ends if all the "Village", "Copper", and "Estate" cards are sold, or all "Copper", "Silver", and "Gold", or any other combination of the groups used in the game.

Of course, if all players left the game, it would naturally end, or if all players but one left the remaining player would win by proxy, but neither way is recommended or listed in the rules.
8. Even in the base version of "Dominion" without expansion packs, the game can be played in different ways. This is done by alternating types of which cards?

Answer: Kingdom cards

Unlike Victory and Treasure cards, only ten of the 24 available Kingdom piles are used in a game. Victory and Treasure cards are somewhat of a staple in the game; the three groups of both categories always appear in a game. Combinations of Kingdom cards are not set by rules, but can be done randomly, or according to suggestions in the manual. The suggestions of gameplay done by varying the Kingdom cards are:

"First Game", an introductory game with basic, building-block Action cards;

"Big Money", the purpose of most of the Kingdom cards being to make you a tycoon;

"Interaction", with a leaning towards Action cards that affect other players as well as you;

"Size Distortion", an introduction of magic;

and "Village Square", a more complex version of "First Game".
9. Which type of cards are the only cards that can be completely omitted from the game, depending on the chosen form of gameplay?

Answer: Curse cards

Curse cards are in their own category because they are not any of the other cards. They take away Victory points, so if a player holds two Curse cards, in the final count two Victory points will be subtracted. Thus, unlike other cards, it is truly a curse to be holding one. Also unlike any of the other cards, the entire category of Curse cards can be added to or taken away from the game according to player preference.
10. "Dominion" is formed with a certain theme, a theme of which historical period?

Answer: Middle Ages

The Middle Ages were the period in European history during which chivalry, monarchy, and social classes were the norm. "Dominion" clearly reflects this with card names such as "Smithy", "Moat", and others. Also, the introduction of the game is rife with Medieval references, saying that the player is a monarch who wishes to build a dominion with many kingdoms and fiefs.
