Rook - The Card Game Trivia Quiz

A quiz on the incredibly fun card game Rook. In my opinion, Rook is one of the best four player card games around. All questions are based on the "Original Rook" version. Best of luck.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game of Rook involves four different colored cards. Of the following, which is NOT one of the colors used in the game?

Answer: Pink

There are 14 red, black, yellow, and green cards. The colors are equal in terms of strength.
2. Similar to the card game "Spades", players bid before play starts in the game of Rook. What is the minimum starting bid that a player is allowed to make?

Answer: 70

Since there are 120 points available, 70 points is approximately 58% of the total. The bids must be divisible by 5 and most final bids end up in the 80-95 range.
3. How many points is the "Rook Bird card" worth when played?

Answer: 20

The Rook card is by far the most valuable card in the game. This card guarantees the team that owns it a minimum of 20 points. The team that makes the final bid is usually the team holding the Rook card.
4. How many cards does each player start the game with?

Answer: 9

The Rook deck comes with 57 cards, but all the cards numbered one through four (16 in total) are removed for the standard game. This leaves 9 cards for each player and 5 cards in the nest.
5. During the dealing stage, five cards end up being placed in the center of the table. These five cards are to be picked up and used by the highest bidder who will then discard five cards back into the center. What is this center area of cards known as?

Answer: Nest

The high bidder usually bids with the hope that the nest will be able to help his/her hand. The high bidder has an advantage over the other players because he/she knows which cards are in the nest and therefore out of play. If there are any point cards in the nest, the team that wins the last trick receives those points.
6. After the high bidder has finished his/her hand, that player announces which color will be the most powerful for that round. This means that if a player does not have the color that was led, he/she can play the power color to win the trick. What is the power color of every game known as?

Answer: Trump

The trump color will probably be the one that the high bidder has the most cards of. The rook is always considered a trump because it can be played at any time. If the trump color was led and a player has the Rook but no other trump cards, the player must play the Rook.
7. There are certain Rook cards that have point values when a team wins tricks in which those cards were played. Each 5 is worth five points, each 10 and 14 are worth 10 points and the Rook is worth the most. What are these important point cards called?

Answer: Counters

Counters have to be played strategically to maximize a team's points. For example, if your teammate is winning the trick and you are the last to play on that particular trick, you should play a counter if you can to receive points.
8. If a team bids 85 points but only scores 75 points, how many points do they receive that hand?

Answer: -85

If your team does not reach its bid, the full bid is deducted from the team's score. This is one of the reasons why bidding is so important.
9. What is the minimum score that a team must attain in order to win the game?

Answer: 300

Three hundred points can be reached very fast if a team gets the Rook card every time. On average, 300 points is reached by one of the teams by the fifth hand. Teams can vary the rules and agree before the game starts to play a certain number of hands instead of reaching 300 points.
10. During a trick, player 1 (Team A) led with the green 14. Player 2 (Team B) played the green 7. Player 3 (Team A) played the green 10. Player 4 (Team B) played the Rook. Which team would win this trick and how many points would they receive?

Answer: Team B - 40 points

Since the Rook is the strongest card in the game, Team B would win the trick. Some players agree on using the Rook card only as a trump card, but the official rules allow the Rook card to be played at any time. Team B would receive 10 points for the green 10, 10 points for the green 14, and 20 points for the Rook.
