Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Edelweiss means what when translated from German?

Answer: Noble and white

Edelweiss actually is more of a silver color, with yellow accents in a star shaped flower. The leaf has the texture of felt. It grows about 12 inches high, and will slowly spread from a clump that appears to be grass when first coming up in the early spring.
2. Which region is Edelweiss (Leontopodium nivale) most common in and associated with?

Answer: Alps

There are 30 forms of Edelweiss. It can be found all over the world in high, cool mountain areas, but is most often seen in Germany, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland. It prefers to grow in high altitude, from 1700 to 2700 meters.
3. Edelweiss only flowers once, then dies.

Answer: False

The Edelweiss will flower year after year but must reseed itself. Continuous picking of the flowers from the same plant will cause it to die off. In other words, look, but don't touch!
4. The Latin term for Edelweiss, Leontopodium, means what?

Answer: Lion's foot

Royalty in Europe often used a picture of the plant in their coat of arms, hence the term lion's foot. (A lion is associated with royalty because of its power and grace.)
5. Edelweiss is known as what kind of charm in Austria and Germany?

Answer: Love charm

More than 50 men died in one year in Austria while trying to climb the mountains to obtain the flower to give to their lady friends.
6. What beverage can be made with Edelweiss?

Answer: Tea

Edelweiss is full of anti-oxidants, and other compounds that are said to help in the ageing process. It is also used in sun block, moisturizer, and anti diarrhea medications. It is even being hailed in the scientific world as a natural medication to help with vascular problems.
7. German soldiers carried Edelweiss with them during World War I, and II.

Answer: True

Alpine soldiers carried a sprig to remind them of home. It was traditionally given to them by a female friend, or sister.
8. Besides over-picking, what has caused the flower to decline in recent years?

Answer: Pollution

The flower is very sensitive to changes in its surroundings. It will not thrive without the crisp mountain air it is used to.
9. What Austrian emperor used Edelweiss on his coat of arms, and is pictured holding it in many royal paintings?

Answer: Franz Joseph

Franz Joseph was the last emperor to use Edelweiss on a coat of arms. After WW1, nobility declined in Europe, and Edelweiss lost much of popularity it held.
10. Most everyone will know the name of the movie that brought Edelweiss back into vogue. What award winning musical is it?

Answer: The Sound of Music

After the movie, tourists almost picked the flower in extinction. Everyone who travelled to Austria in particular took a piece home. Today it is a protected species in Europe. It is available in some greenhouses in the United States, and dried flowers are available from several Canadian companies.

It is not the prettiest flower in my garden, but when people see it they almost always begin to hum the song. It is a conversation piece to say the least!
