Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This many-colored rose variety might bring to mind a certain favored (and oh so dreamy) son and the amazing gift bestowed upon him.

Answer: Joseph's Coat

The Joseph's Coat Rose is a cross between the Hybrid Tea and a Polyantha Rose. It grows in large clusters on a shrub or as a climber. A single plant may produce many flowers in a variety of colors with many shades of pinks, yellows, oranges, and reds.

In the Biblical narrative, Jacob favored Joseph most of all his twelve sons and gave to him a special coat of many colors. Joseph's brothers were jealous of him, and when he shared two of his dreams with them suggesting that they would one day bow down to him, they plotted to get rid of him. They spared his life, but sold him into slavery. Amazingly, his fortunes were turned around and Joseph ended up becoming Vizier of Egypt.

2. Roses can be named after famous actresses as well. What rose is named for the actress who won three individual Academy Awards, but not for her most famous role in "Casablanca"(1942)?

Answer: Rosa Ingrid Bergman

Rosa Ingrid Bergman is a rose with petals that are dark red and velvety. This is another Hybrid Tea rose which was hybridised by Poulsen in 1984 as a cross between the red hybrid tea 'Precious Platinum' (Dickson 1974) and an unnamed seedling.

Ingrid Bergman , one of the world's most talented actresses filmed movies in Swedish, English, German and Italian and won three Oscars: Best Actress for "Gaslight" (1944) and "Anastasia: (1956); and a Best Supporting Actress for "Murder on the Orient Express" (1974).

While everybody wanted to talk to her about her role in "Casablanca", she did not: "I made so many films which were more important, but the only one people ever want to talk about is that one with Bogart."

3. Oh sonata my symphony, which of the following red roses was named after the composer Mozart?

Answer: Amadeus

The Amadeus is an award winning rose that is a vigorous climber and was developed by W. Kordes and Sons in 2003. It is a Hybrid Tea that has dark green and glossy foliage, has a slight fragrance but produces masses of fiery red hot blooms that are medium in size and double in form.

Commonly known as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart he was baptised Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. I have not been able to find any record of roses by the name of "Wolfgangus" or "Cosi Fan Tutti" (one of Mozart's works). Another of Mozart's works was "The Marriage of Figaro" and there is a record of a Madame Figaro rose, however, rather than being a red rose it is very pale pink in colour.

4. While scouting round the Victoria (Aus) State Rose Garden, be prepared to find a delightful, tight-budded red rose, named for which Dame Grand Cross of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire?

Answer: Olave Baden-Powell

Olave Baden-Powell was, of course, wife of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement. She was recognised for her services to Guiding by King George V. She died in 1977.

The scarlet hybrid tea rose that bears her name was bred by German nurseryman Mathias Tantau Jr. in the early 1970s.

5. Which lightly scented pink rose is named for a woman who was born on Martinique but later joined her second husband in Europe?

Answer: Empress Josephine

The Empress Josephine is a shrub rose with large wavy petals that are a clear pink in colour and have small veins of a deep pink running through them. It is a bushy plant that bears a strong fragrance and, like the lady they were named after, has no thorns.

The Empress Josephine was actually called Rose until her marriage to Napoleon, who preferred her more formal given name. She had a grand rose garden at the Chateau de Malmaison and collected specimens from around the world.

6. The Mister Lincoln rose, named after 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, is a large hybrid tea rose with a strong fragrance. As a reminder of his passing, what colour is it?

Answer: Deep red

The Mister Lincoln was developed by rose breeder Swim & Weeks in 1964. The rose is famous for its red colour and rich perfume that can be detected up to a distance of ten feet. Its blooms are large and can be up to six inches in diameter.

Like Abraham Lincoln, the Mister Lincoln is a tall rose bush and can grow up to six feet or more in height.

7. This hot pink rose is named in honour of a woman considered to be one of the most beautiful. Who is this woman who had violet eyes, sultry curves, many husbands, and a fantastic jewellery collection?

Answer: Elizabeth Taylor

The Elizabeth Taylor rose is a shapely, flamboyant, shocking pink flower on long stems perfect for cutting and display. I do think they missed a trick not matching it to her violet eyes though.

Elizabeth Taylor (1932 -2011) was a immense star of her generation, and lived a long life in the spotlight. She was married eight times to seven men, the most famous of which was Richard Burton whom she married twice. He added to her amazing jewellery collection gifting her with the Krupp Diamond, the Taylor-Burton Diamond and the La Peregrina Pearl.

8. What graceful pink and white rose was originally named 'Meisponge' by its breeder, but is also known by the names 'Cherry Parfait' in the USA and 'Fire & Ice' in Australia?

Answer: Jubile Du Prince De Monaco

The Jubile Du Prince De Monaco rose is white or light cream with a striking crimson-red edging. The reason for its name is uncertain; some sources say it was named in honour of the Coronation of Prince Albert of Monaco, while others suggest it was celebrating the anniversary of the adoption of the national flag of Monaco, the colours of which are red and white. Regardless of the reason, it blooms in the Princess Grace Rose Garden in Fontvieille, Monaco.

There's some debate about whether it's a grandiflora rose, or a floribunda, as it has characteristics of each. Its patent application, however, describes it a floribunda. It was first bred in France by Alain Meilland. Alain was the third generation of the family to be involved in the cultivation and breeding of roses; the Meilland dynasty began in 1945 with the production of the Peace rose, also known as Gloria Dei.

9. Which rose is rather appropriately named after the beautiful Greek goddess to whom roses were sacred?

Answer: Aphrodite

The Aphrodite is a charming soft pink Hybrid Tea with large cup-shaped blooms. It was first bred in Germany in 2006.

Of the four options, only Aphrodite was a goddess. The Roman poet Ovid introduced us to the ill-fated Thisbe in his "Metamorphoses". Sappho was a Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. Antigone was the daughter of the tragic hero Oedipus.

10. "Venus and Mars" must have aligned, for a pink rose was named after the man who released the 1973 album "Red Rose Speedway" and was a composer of "Silly Love Songs". Which rose might it be?

Answer: Paul McCartney

This has been described as "the perfect rose for a man with perfectionist tendencies". It is a hybrid tea rose bred by Meilland in 1996 bearing deep pink double blooms with about 20-25 petals. It has a sweet candy like fragrance and was released in honour of McCartney's 50th birthday.

Paul McCartney released the album "Venus and Mars" in 1975 and the single "Silly Love Songs" topped Billboard's Hottest 100 chart in 1976.
