Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Garlic is called the "Stinking Rose" because it is a member of the rose family.

Answer: False

Garlic is actually a member of the lily family, which also includes onions and chives. Its scientific name is allium sativum liliacae.
2. Who said: "Eat no onions nor garlic, for we are to utter sweet breath"?

Answer: William Shakespeare

Bottom said this in "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Shakespeare didn't have anything good to say about garlic, although the Elizabetheans thought of garlic as an aphrodisiac.
3. Approximately how many varieties of garlic are there world wide?

Answer: 600

The garlic you find most often in Canadian supermarkets is white-skinned American garlic. Italian and Mexican garlic is purple and its flavour is a little milder.
4. Garlic is mentioned in the Bible.

Answer: True

A reference is found in Numbers 11:5. Garlic originated in Central Asia and was well known in the Middle East in biblical times. Clay models of garlic have been found in Tutankhamen's tomb.
5. In which of these ancient cultures was garlic known and used?

Answer: All of them

The Romans fed garlic to their soldiers to make them courageous. Egyptians used garlic for cooking and embalming. In China garlic was used mostly as medicine.
6. Garlic has been used as medicine in many cultures. Today it is being studied for a number of properties. Which of these are possible beneficial effects of garlic?

Answer: All of them

Unfortunately, although there is plenty of anecdotal evidence, controlled studies have not shown consistent, long-term effects. That does not mean garlic doesn't work, only that scientific standards have not yet been met.
7. When is the best time to plant garlic?

Answer: In fall

As for other bulbs, fall is the best time for planting garlic, four to six weeks before significant ground freezing. It likes well drained soil in a sunny location. It should be harvested when the lower part of the plant has turned brown, but there are still lots of green leaves. If in doubt, test-dig one or two plants.
8. In the early 20th century garlic was not popular in America. Which is a 1920s slang term for garlic?

Answer: All of them

It wasn't until the 1940s that American "foodies" suddenly discovered garlic. Today about 250 million pounds of garlic are consumed per year in the USA.
9. Everybody knows that vampires are repelled by garlic, but garlic has been shown to have a lethal effect on which of Dracula's pesky little cousins? (Hint: they made an appearance in the movie "Stand by me")

Answer: Leeches

Leeches are being used in medicine to prevent blood clot formation after microsurgery. During a study to determine what makes them bite and what repels them, it was found that exposure to garlic causes them to wriggle around and die. Garlic juice is also used in some mosquito repellants.
10. What is the term for one segment of a garlic bulb?

Answer: toe

Another term is "clove". When you roast garlic, its flavour becomes quite mellow. One toe of fresh garlic, crushed in a garlic press, has about as much flavour as a whole bulb of roasted garlic. Of course there are variations depending on the kind of garlic.
