Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does a cartophilist collect?

Answer: trading cards

Cartophily is from the French for "card" and the Greek for "love of". This hobby originated with collecting cards provided with cigarettes and evolved into baseball trading card collections and, more recently, Pokémon cards.
2. What common item would a philographist collect?

Answer: autographs

Philography is the hobby of collecting autographs, usually of famous people and, more recently, those of notoriety.
3. What unusual item would a brandophilist collect?

Answer: cigar bands

Usually a hobby primarily pursued by males, brandophilists specifically collect cigar bands or, more generally, all items of one single brand, e.g., famous brand logos of cigars.
4. What is the name for the hobbyist who collects postcards?

Answer: deltiologist

Deltiology is from the Greek for "writing tablet, letter" and is the collecting of postcards. Postcards can be collected by institutions for historical purposes, by a single collector with an interest in a specific time, place or subject, or by the general population as a record of places visited.
5. What is the name given to a collector of dolls?

Answer: planganologist

A collector of dolls may also be a porcelainist, i.e., collector of porcelain dolls. As for the incorrect answers: a tegestologist collects beermats; an arctophilist collects teddy bears and a delphite is connected with pottery.
6. What specific name would you give to a butterfly collector?

Answer: lepidopterist

A lepidopterist is someone who studies and/or collects "lepidopterans, i.e., butterflies and moths", while an entomologist studies insects in general. A copoclephile collects keyrings, and an iconophile deals with crosses and relics.
7. What is the name for a collector of matchbooks and matchboxes?

Answer: phillumenist

The word phillumenist comes from the Latin meaning "lover of light" which, by extension, is the byproduct of matches. This hobby provides the collector with free souvenirs from places he has been. With respect to the incorrect answers:
an exlibrist collects books; a philatelist has the more common hobby of stamp-collecting; a sulfurist was just thrown in because sulfur is also connected with matches.
8. What does a paroemiographer collect?

Answer: proverbs

A paroemiographer collects proverbs, I imagine, for learning and teaching purposes; however, I am unable to find a good definition of this word online or in the dictionary. It should probably also go in a collection for "big word lovers" (for which I also could not find a synonym).
9. What would a notaphilist collect?

Answer: currency

A notaphilist collects banknotes and/or paper currency. I wish I could be a notaphilist but I can't even save money, much less collect it!
10. What possession would a vexillologist study?

Answer: flags

Vexillology is the "study of flags" and originates from the Roman word "vexillum", which was a "type of flag used by the Roman legions" and translates as "little flag". Betsy Ross would be considered a vexillographer for the American Revolutionary War of 1775-1783.
