Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why do stained glass artists grind the edges of the cut pieces of glass?

Answer: All of these

When I first started making glass, I relied heavily on the grinder for adjustments in piece shape. After many years of practice I now use the grinder merely to rough up my edges.
2. Which of the following describes a good beginner project?

Answer: Ten or fewer pieces that are at least 2" in size and of light color

The beginner will find that light colored glass is easier to mark and cut accurately.
3. Which item(s) would you expect to find in a stained glass hobbyist shop?

Answer: Horse shoe nails

Horse shoe nails are used to hold lead came in place as you "build" your project.
4. Why is copper foil placed around the edges of the glass pieces?

Answer: To provide a medium to which the solder will adhere

Copper foil placed properly can also add a little padding to a piece cut a tad too small.
5. Which of the following tips should you NOT follow if you want to obtain a nice solder bead?

Answer: Let the flux air dry before soldering the project

Flux comes in liquid, gel, and paste forms. You have to experiment to see with which one you prefer working.
6. What is meant by "scoring" the glass?

Answer: Using a cutter to make a line in the glass, delineating where it will break

Once the score line is marked on the glass, there are several tools that might be used to finish the break. I prefer a pair of pliers that pinches the tool instead of tapping the score with a pair of breaking pliers.
7. A stained glass studio can pose many hazards. Which precaution is NOT necessary when working with glass?

Answer: Wearing heavy gloves to keep from cutting oneself

If you were wearing heavy gloves, you wouldn't have the dexterity necessary to work with glass. If you wear gloves (which is a good idea), you need light, flexible ones which are however resistant to cuts. Thin but sturdy latex gloves can come in handy!
8. Which of the following statements about scoring glass is NOT true?

Answer: Go over score lines multiple times to ensure the glass will break along the line

Running the cutter over the score lines multiple times will ruin your cutting head and it will have to be replaced.
9. Which is NOT a reason for using wider copper foil?

Answer: You want a smaller solder line

I use specifically designed tools for each width of foil tape.
10. Why would your solder spit or sputter?

Answer: You've used too much flux

A little flux goes a long way. Only apply it to a small area of the glass before soldering that section and moving on.
