Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First thing I want to do is a make a necklace, but I want to see what it will look like before I string it. What should I use?

Answer: Bead Board

I always lay out my designs on a bead board before I string them. I get to see what they will look like as a finished product, but also what the finished length of the design will be.
2. Next, I need to start the necklace, but I have to make sure the beads won't fall off the other end of my beading wire. I have a little tube that I can slide through the wire to "tie" off the end, but I have to flatten the tube. What tool do I need to do this?

Answer: Crimping pliers

Crimp beads are used to keep the ends of the beading wire closed, or used as part of the design to separate beads.
3. I've chosen to make a pearl necklace. Since pearls are rather delicate, I don't want them to touch each other; I have to tie knots between each one to buffer them from each other. There is a tool designed just for this task. What is it called?

Answer: Tri Cord Knotter

The Tri Cord Knotter is used to knot pearls and beads professionally and quickly (as fast as 5 seconds per bead). May be used with silk or nylon bead cord, and can be used by left or right-handed people. You can also use hat pins or corsage pins to knot if you are adept at knotting.
4. I've finished stringing the pearls and want to finish off the necklace. I'm about to add the clasp, and need to use a jump ring. What tool do I need to close the jump ring without scratching it?

Answer: Flat nose pliers

Flat nosed pliers have a flat surface to prevent marking soft metals. You can also get nylon jaw pliers especially for those who work metal wire to prevent nicks and chips on the color of the wire.
5. The necklace is done, and I want to make some earrings to go with it. I want to make dangle earrings, which require me to make jewelry loops. I need several tools to make these, but the first one I need is used to cut the headpin or eyepin. What would I use to cut these?

Answer: Side cutting pliers

Side cutting pliers work best on precious metals and soft craft wires. They are not made for cutting stainless steel cable type wires.
6. Now that I have cut the headpin or eyepin, I need to roll the wire into a loop. What is this tool called?

Answer: Round nose pliers

The round nose pliers are used for making loops and curves. You can also purchase rosary pliers, which combine the versatility of round nose pliers and side cutters.
7. Now I'd like to make a necklace and bracelet using memory wire. Since memory wire is made from steel, I don't want to use my side cutting shears. I'll need to use another tool for this project. What is it called?

Answer: Memory wire shears

Memory wire shears are made specifically to easily cut hard wires such as memory wire (steel) and precious metals. These shears will create a straight (flat) cutoff, so they work wonderfully for headpins too.
8. We are going to work with seed beads now. Seed beads are the tiny beads that can be woven into designs. To make it easier to make larger designs, there is a tool you can use. What is it?

Answer: Beading loom

A good beading loom will keep your warp threads taut. The thread guides will keep your design straight and uniform, so your work stays aligned. Beading needles are necessary when making small jewelry projects, and beading tweezers are used for picking up seed beads and other small items.
9. Feel like working with wire to design a project? You can make everything from coils to butterflies and more if you have the right tool. What might I want to use?

Answer: Thing-A-Ma-Jig

A Thing-A-Ma-Jig is a small peg board with moveable pegs of varying sizes that will help you wrap your wire into shapes, and keep them even. There are other wire jigs or tools you can buy, but the Thing-A-Ma-Jig is one of the best out there, especially for beginners. If you are not familiar with this tool, first check with your local bead or craft store. If they don't carry it, you can try Fire Mountain Gems online or do a Google and you'll find many online stores that carry it.
10. Now that we have our tools, what are we going to make? There are several resources we can use to help design jewelry projects. Which could you choose?

Answer: All of these

You can order several beading magazines, and they usually have a "how-to" section in the front or back of each one. Your local bookstore carries a whole section on crafts, and beading or jewelry making is usually well represented. You may also look into taking classes from your local bead store or craft supply store. In many cases, you pay only for supplies, and for more advanced classes, you may also pay teacher's fees or equipment rental as well.

These are all tools that I use in the US. I believe they are universal, but if you see something that you know has another name, please send me a note and I'll add it to the info.

Happy crafting!
