Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gnocchi is a type of pasta, but with a main added ingredient. What is that main ingredient?

Answer: Potato

Gnocchi are usually little potato and pasta dumplings. Delicious with either a tomato or four cheese sauce or just with butter and herbs (especially sage).
2. Tiramisu is a delicious layered dessert made with sponge fingers, coffee, mascarpone and booze. Literally translated, what does 'tiramisu' mean?

Answer: 'Pick me up'

This dessert is probably my favourite. The large amounts of coffee in the recipe gave it its name.
3. Amaretti are little crunchy biscuits with the flavour of which nut?

Answer: Almond

There is also a liqueur, called Amaretto, with a similar flavour. Highly recommended!
4. What is the main flavour of tartufo, another Italian dessert?

Answer: Chocolate

Another one of my personal favourites!
5. What are the main ingredient(s) of any Italian dish that is described as Florentine in culinary terms?

Answer: Spinach

Spinach is especially yummy in cannelloni and lasagna.
6. Which of the following is NOT an ingredient in pesto?

Answer: Black olives

Pesto can be used in a wide variety of dishes but I love it on its own on warm pasta with an extra sprinkling of fresh parmesan.
7. What, in Italian, is 'prosciutto'?

Answer: Ham

Equally delicious in pasta, on pizzas or just on bread.
8. 'Focaccia' is a type of what?

Answer: Bread

A yeast-based bread. Delicious warm and straight from the oven but still quite gorgeous cold.
9. Which of these is NOT a stuffed pasta dish?

Answer: Fusilli

10. What is the main ingredient of passata, often used in Italian cooking?

Answer: Tomato

Delicious on its own stirred in with hot pasta with just a little fresh parmesan sprinkled on top.
