Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a fancy design that looks like braids called?

Answer: Cable knit

A cable knit is made by holding some stitches either to the front or the back of the work, knitting a few stitches from the work, then knitting the stitches that were held off. A tool known as a cable needle is used for this. It is a special knitting needle with points at each end and a bend in the middle where the cable stitches rest while they are being held to the front or back.
2. What does a yarn over do on a knitting pattern?

Answer: Produces a small hole

A yarn over is a technique used for adding a stitch. It is used in many patterns, but especially in lace knitting. With all of the other stitches, yarn overs in lace knitting add dimension and clarify the lace patterns in the stitches.
3. What is it called when the pattern creates a single layer of fabric that looks woven?

Answer: Entrelac knitting

Entrelac knitting creates a beautiful pattern. It starts off with a row of knit triangles, then builds back and forth from there. It is much less complicated than it looks. As long as the pattern is followed, it knits up quickly, and can be done by a relatively new knitter.

The pattern creates an optical Illusion, making the textile look woven. However, it is just a single layer of fabric that looks woven because of the back and forth diagonal pattern that is used.
4. What is the "i" in "i-cord" said to stand for?

Answer: Idiot

An i-cord is a very simple knitting technique that is completed using only a few stitches. Typically, three or four stitches are cast on and knit using needles with points on both ends. Rather than turn the work at the end of the row, the stitches are slid back to the other end of the needle and knit to make a tight tube.

It can be used for appliqué in knitted projects, edging, or other decorative uses. Elizabeth Zimmerman, a famous knitter, is said to have named it after her accidental discovery of the very simple technique.
5. If a US pattern calls for a size 7 needle, what would be the metric equivalent?

Answer: 4.5 mm

This is where following a pattern can get tricky. There once were three systems to measure the diameter of knitting needles. Going from smallest to largest, the US system ranges from 0 to 17, the UK system, although now obsolete, ranges from 24 to 0, and the metric system gives the precise diameter in millimetres, ranging from 0.5 up to 10.

A size 4.5 mm is a US 7 and a UK 7. They spread from there with a 5 mm needle being a US 8 and a UK 6, a 5.5 mm is a US 9 and a UK 5. Likewise, the spread goes in the opposite direction as they get smaller, with a 4 mm needle being a US 6 and a UK 8, a 3.75 mm needle being a US 5 and a UK 9 and so on. Older patterns will have the UK size on them, so it is vital to either have a pattern with the metric size in it, or to know where and when it was published so the proper needles can be chosen for the project.
6. "Round" or "circular" needles can only for knitting a tube, and cannot be used for knitting a flat object.

Answer: False

"Round" or "circular" needles are knitting needles that are joined together using a plastic cable or wire. They are designed for knitting tubes such as sleeves, sweater bodies, mittens, and socks. However, they can also be used for knitting any flat item. I particularly like using them in cramped places like airplanes. If you accidentally drop one, you don't have to worry about searching for it because it is attached to the other one.
7. What tool is vital in knitting to help thread your yarn through stitches to close off or weave in ends?

Answer: Blunt ended needle

A blunt ended needle is a vital tool in knitting. It won't split the yarn like a sharp needle would, and allows for picking up single or multiple stitches when you are closing a seam, or weaving in the ends after a project is knit.
8. Fair isle knitting involves more than one colour, typically knit in the round. How is the colour not currently being used managed?

Answer: It is typically carried behind the live stitches, twisting at colour changes

There are two different types of knitting where multiple colours are used. With intarsia knitting, fields of different colours are worked without carrying the yarn on the back of the work. Fair isle knitting has knitters carry un-used yarn along the backside of the work, then twisting with the active yarn when it is used again.

In both of these cases, it can come in handy to wind contrasting colours onto bobbins to help prevent them from tangling.
9. What does "knitted toe-up" mean?

Answer: Socks that are knit beginning at the toe and worked toward the cuff

There are two main ways to knit a sock. Some prefer to knit them starting at the top and working down, while others prefer to knit them starting at the toe and knitting up. There are even techniques that can be used to knit two-at-a-time in either direction. If you have a limited amount of yarn, the best sock-knitting technique is two-at-a-time, toe-up. That way, you can knit two identical socks, and just keep knitting without having to worry about running out of yarn midway along the second sock.
10. What does "dpn" mean if you see it on a knitting patterns?

Answer: Double pointed needles

Double pointed needles, or dpns, are used to knit circular objects that have a small diameter such as socks, gloves, mittens, or the tops of hats. Typically, four or five needles are used. Two or three of them simply act as "holders" of stitches while the object is knit on the other two.

The dpns are needed because of the nature of knitting in a circle. If a typical needle were used, a stopper or end piece would end up at the beginning of a section to be knit, making it impossible to proceed.
