Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This childhood staple is made of cooked dough, a legume paste, and fruit based gelatin.

Answer: Peanut butter and jelly sandwich

Did you know that the average American child will eat more than 1500 PB&J sandwiches before they graduate from high school?
2. This drink is traditionally made with milk and/or cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and eggs. Additionally liquors such as rum, brandy, whiskey and other may be added. Nutmeg and/or cinnamon may be sprinkled on top to add taste and a festive appeal.

Answer: Eggnog

There was actually an Eggnog Riot at the West Point. Whiskey was smuggled onto the campus by cadets to make eggnog on Christmas Day in 1826. A riot ensued involving better than 1/3 of the cadets. This led to 20 cadets and one enlisted soldier being court-martialed. Jefferson Davis, The future Confederate States of America was involved in the riot but was not court-martialed.
3. This dish consists of drained canned: kidney beans, corn, and green chilies; diced tomatoes; sliced green onion; mixed greens; and sour cream. Toss these ingredients together, serve over tortilla chips, and top with your choice of olives, grated cheese, taco sauce, etc.

Answer: Veggie taco salad

This dish can be served as a main dish for those who prefer not to consume meat. It is a very adaptable dish as choices for ingredients are bound only by your imagination.
4. This dish is often served as an appetizer or side dish. It usually consists of a leaf lettuce along with other garden vegetables and topped with a dressing of the diner's choice.

Answer: Garden Salad

Many people erroneously believe that because they chose the salad bar, they are eating healthily and contributing to a lower calorie intake. If one is not careful with their topping and dressing choices, the calorie intake can exceed that of fast food super burger combo meal.
5. Firm, white fish is marinated in lime juice with cilantro and onions. Other ingredients may be added to the fish.

Answer: Ceviche

The creation of this dish is disputed but is believed to hail from Peru. The acid in the lime juice is what "cooks" the fish. I would advise making this meal when limes are plentiful and fairly inexpensive as 2 pounds of fish requires approximately 17 average sized limes.
6. This pie consists of a graham cracker crust, cream cheese, condensed milk, lemon juice, and fruit pie filling.

Answer: Cheesecake pie

This easily made pie can be made with virtually any fruit. Cheesecake pie is believed to have been created by the Greeks. July 30 is set aside as the day America celebrates this simple dessert, but I have yet to see a Hallmark card for this holiday.
7. Mashed avocados, chopped onion, minced garlic, and lemon/lime juice. This can be a topping for other dishes or eaten with tortilla chips.

Answer: Guacamole

I recommend using Hass avocados (the pebble skinned variety) as they are more flavorful than the larger smooth skinned types. Believe it not when I chose a milkshake as a wrong answer I was thinking how nasty it sounded. It turns out avocado milkshakes are common in many countries including the Philippines, Brazil, and other countries.
8. This snack has many variations. It may include M&M's, roasted nuts, sunflower seeds, breakfast cereals, and/or dried fruits.

Answer: Trail mix

This snack was developed as an ideal snack for hikers due to its low weight, great taste, nutrition, and quick energy attributes.
9. This cool refreshing drink consists of pureed fruit, fruit juice, and ice. Variations abound!

Answer: Fruit smoothie

This blended fruit drink was developed as a healthy alternative to milkshakes.
10. This treat consists of fruit juice and flat wooden sticks.

Answer: Popsicles

The first popsicle was created by an 11 year old boy. Frank Epperson left a glass of homemade pop outside. He had left a stir stick in the glass with which he was able to remove the frozen treat.
