Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the object of Suicide Chess?

Answer: Force your opponent to capture all of your pieces.

The object is to simply lose all of your material including your king.
You may also win if you have less material in a stalemate position. (FICS rules.) The king is treated the same as any other piece and kings may capture kings. Captures are compulsory and if there are multiple captures possible, the player may choose which piece to capture.
2. You may not have more than one king.

Answer: False

You may promote a pawn to as many kings as you like. Kings are often a valuable endgame piece.
3. Which of the following openings result in a forced win for Black?

Answer: 1.d3

1.d3 is a forced win for Black as follows:

1. d3 g5
2. Bxg5 Bg7
3. Bxe7 Bxb2
4. Bxd8 Bxa1
5. Bxc7 Bc3
6. Nxc3 d5
7. Nxd5 Nf6
8. Nxf6 Rg8
9. Bxb8 Rxb8
10. Nxe8 Rxg2
11. Bxg2 f6
12. Bxb7 Rxb7
13. Nxf6 Rb6
14. Nxh7 Rb1
15. Qxb1 Bb7
16. Qxb7 a6
17. Qxa6
4. What are the fewest moves possible to achieve checkmate in a regular (traditional, i.e. Not Suicide) game of chess?

Answer: 2

White can be checkmated in 2 moves as follows: 1.f3 e5 2.g4 Qh4#. I thought that I would slip in a question about normal chess as a prelude to the next question.
5. What are the fewest possible number of moves needed to win a game of Suicide Chess by giving away all of your pieces?

Answer: 17

There are 16 captures plus one move.
6. Which of the following moves leads to a forced win by Black?

Answer: 1.e4

While 1.e4 is an excellent opening move in normal chess, it is a forced win for Black as follows:

1. e4 b5
2. Bxb5 Nf6
3. Bxd7 Nxe4
4. Bxc8 Nxf2
5. Kxf2 Qxd2
6. Nxd2 6. f5
7. Bxf5 Rg8
8. Bxh7 a6
9. Bxg8 Kf7
10. Bxf7 e6
11. Bxe6 Nd7
12. Bxd7 c6
13. Bxc6 g5
14. Bxa8 g4
15. Qxg4 Bb4
16. Qxb4 a5
17. Qxa5
7. In an endgame with only two knights remaining, who should win? For example: White has a knight on h1 and Black has a knight on b1.

Answer: The knight to move will win if they start on the same color square.

Example: The WN starts on h1. The BN starts on b1.

1.Nf2 Na3
2.Nd3 Nb5
3.Nc5 Na3
4.Nb3 wins by forcing Black to capture on the next move.
8. Which of the following moves would be considered safe to play for White?

Answer: 1.b3

1.b3 is the only move of those listed that does not result in a forced win for Black.
9. If White has a rook on f1 and Black has a king on h8, with White to move, what is White's best move?

Answer: Rf6

Rf6 establishes a 'zugzwang' position for Black as the Black king must move within range of the rook on its next move. The other moves lose for White.
10. What is not another name for Suicide Chess?

Answer: Crazyhouse

Crazyhouse is another chess variant that is played by two players with different rules.
