Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following gods/goddesses is NOT one of the twelve Olympians?

Answer: Hades

Even though Hades is Zeus's and Poseidon's brother, he doesn't get to live in Olympus. He gets stuck in the Underworld.
2. Which of the following gods is Aphrodite's husband?

Answer: Hephaestus

Aphrodite is technically married to Hephaestus, but she REALLY likes Ares, god of war.
3. Who is the last god/goddess to have joined the ranks of Olympus?

Answer: Dionysus

When Dionysus was made a god, the twelve Olympians realized that there were only twelve seats in Olympus. The goddess Hestia, of home and hearth, gave her seat to Dionysus, knowing that it would be the easiest way to prevent to much arguing between the gods. Now she tends the fire in Olympus.
4. Which two Olympians are twins?

Answer: Apollo and Artemis

Although Zeus and Poseidon are brothers, they are not twins. Apollo and Artemis are the children of Zeus and the Titaness Leto. Both (Apollo and Artemis, not Zeus and Leto) are god/goddess of archery and plague. Apollo is also god of poetry, the sun, and prophecy. Artemis is goddess of the hunt and the moon.
5. Which god/goddess created the horse?

Answer: Poseidon

The story behind this is that Poseidon was chasing Demeter (those gods sure have crazy love lives). When he caught her, Demeter demanded that for things to go any further, he had to create a 'nice' creature for her. Demeter thought Poseidon could only make sea monsters, so she thought she'd be getting off easy. Poseidon, however, took this challenge to heart.

Some accounts say that during the process of making the horse, he also created the camel, giraffe, donkey, and zebra. When he finally came up with the horse, he was so delighted with it, he completely forgot about Demeter and spent the rest of the day creating and riding horses.
6. Perseus, the demigod who killed the gorgon Medusa, is the child of which god?

Answer: Zeus

His mortal mother was Danae. When he was born, he and Danae were abandoned in the sea by the king Acrisius, Danae's father. He did so because of a prophecy that said Perseus would eventually kill him. After he had grown up, he accidentally killed Acrisius with a discus that had been thrown too hard. Sorry if this question was confusing, any of you who have read the Percy Jackson series. Even though that Percy is son of Poseidon, the original Perseus was son of Zeus.
7. Who is the father of Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, and all of their siblings?

Answer: Cronus

Cronus, like his father, was afraid that his children would overthrow him, so as they were born, he ate them. However, when Zeus was born, his mother Rhea fed Cronus a rock instead of Zeus. Later, Cronus was fed some herbs that made him throw up Hestia, Hades, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, and the rock. Since Zeus's siblings are immortal, they were growing up inside Cronus's stomach. Ew!
8. What is Athena's symbol?

Answer: Owl

It fits that Athena's symbol is the owl, since it is supposedly a wise animal, and Athena is the goddess of wisdom.
9. Which goddess is a maiden? This means she has vowed never to marry or have children.

Answer: Artemis

Artemis is one of the only gods/goddesses that doesn't have dozens of children (I'm including minor gods and goddesses in this; of the Olympians, Hestia and Athena are also maidens.) However, she does have a group of huntresses that accompany her on her hunts. These young girls are sort of like her apprentices, and have also vowed to be maidens.
10. Thalia is one of the nine muses, goddesses of the arts. Which art specifically is she the goddess of?

Answer: Comedy

Thalia is the goddess of comedy. Her eight sisters are as follows: Calliope-epic poetry Clio-history Erato-love poetry Euterpe-music Melpomene-tragedy Polyhymnia-sacred poetry Terpsichore-dance Urania-astronomy
