Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
We'll look at the Greeks first. Aeolus was identified as the ruler of the winds in Homer's 'Odyssey'. There are other possible candidates, but they are all Greek. Atropos is one of the Fates, responsible for cutting the thread that keeps humans alive to cause their deaths. Chronos personifies time while Erebus is the son of Chaos and is the personification of darkness.
Harmonia, as her name indicates, is the goddess of harmony and agreement - her opposite is Eris. Hecate is associated with magic and witchcraft while Hesperus is the son of Eos, goddess of the dawn, and represents the evening star - the planet Venus. Lyssa is the spirit of rage, madness and rabies in animals. Metis is the first wife of Zeus and a daughter of the Titans. She is credited with helping Zeus free his siblings from Cronus's stomach and assisted in the birth of their daughter, Athena, from Zeus's head.
Nike is the goddess of victory - her wings are the inspiration for the 'swoosh' on the trainers made by the Nike company - and Prometheus is a Titan, the god of fire who gave this to humans as a gift and was doomed to eternal punishment for his generosity. Tartarus was one of the primordial gods, those that preceded the Titans while Thanatos is the personification of death. The final two are Uranus, personification of the sky and the only mythical Greek to give his name to a planet, and Zephyrus, one of the wind gods. He gives us the word zephyr for a gentle breeze and personifies the west wind.
The Romans are Aurora, goddess of the dawn, Ceres, goddess of agriculture and Discordia who is, as you'd anticipate from the name, the goddess of strife and equivalent to the Greek Eris. Febris is the goddess of fever, Fides is the goddess of trust and fidelity, and Juventus is the goddess for youth from which we derive words like juvenile and rejuvenate. Neptune is the god of the sea, equivalent to the Greek Poseidon, Pomona is the goddess of fruit and orchards, while Veritas is the goddess of truth.
