Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is NOT a B and S musical?

Answer: The Civil War

'The Civil War' - unfortunately completely unknown here in Germany - was composed by Frank Wildhorn ('Jekyll and Hyde', 'The Scarlet Pimpernel'). It ran on Broadway for 61 performances and 35 previews. While it was not much of a success there, it did get nominated for two Tony Awards (Best Musical and Best Original Score) and for three Drama Desk Awards.

It did not win any of these, though. (Thanks to amaranita for the additional info.)
2. The original French lyrics of the B and S musicals were written by Alain Boublil, but someone else translated them into English. Who NEVER did that job so far?

Answer: Jim Steinman

Jim Steinman wrote the lyrics of Lloyd Webber's 'Whistle Down The Wind' and he composed 'Tanz der Vampire' ('Dance of the Vampires'), but he didn't translate for B and S. Kretzmer did 'Les Miz', Maltby Jr. 'Miss Saigon', and Stephen Clarke translated 'Martin Guerre'. together with Edward Hardy.
3. 'The Return of Martin Guerre' was the novel on which they based 'Martin Guerre'. Several movies were also made concerning the theme. Can you name the one starring Richard Gere and Jodie Foster?

Answer: Sommersby

The difference between the movie and the musical - apart from names and places, of course - is that the real Sommersby is really dead. Martin is still alive and was just thought to be dead. There are some other movies as well, one starring Gerard Depardieu as 'Martin'.
4. 'Miss Saigon' was based on Puccini's opera 'Madame Butterfly'. But the opera was based on a novel. Which one?

Answer: Madame Chrysantheme

'Papillon' means 'butterfly' in French, but the original novel was called 'Madame Chrysantheme'. I made up the other novels - at least I don't know them if they exist.
5. What is the other famous novel by Victor Hugo who wrote 'Les Miserables'?

Answer: The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

Baroness Emma Orczy invented Sir Percy, Robert Louis Stevenson wrote 'Jekyll and Hyde'. The case of Martin Guerre is authentic and happened 1560 in Toulon. The novel 'The Return of Martin Guerre' was written by Natalie Zemon Davis.
6. From which B and S musical is the following quote: 'All the insults and the names - The kicks, the tricks, the vicious games - To make a young man reach his prime.'

Answer: Martin Guerre

Martin sings it when he decides to go away and live his life without having to obey anyone. He ends up fighting in a religious war where he meets Arnaud.
7. Which character in 'Les Miserables' claims to be the one 'who runs this town' when commenting on Javert (Act 1)?

Answer: Gavroche

'The inspector thinks he's something, but it's me who runs this town...' Gavroche comments on Javert right after 'Stars'.
8. From which song is the following quote from 'Miss Saigon': 'I know there's nothing in their hearts but every time I take one in my arms it starts'?

Answer: The Movie In My Mind

Right after having been elected Miss Saigon, Gigi reflects on her life and her dream. The other girls join in.
9. What are the names of the three old ladies in 'Martin Guerre' who remember their deceased husbands and complain about 'Sleeping On Our Own'?

Answer: Ernestine, Celestine and Hortense

Cosette, Eponine and Azelma are characters from 'Les Miz' (Eponine's sister Azelma doesn't appear in the musical). Suzanne is Bertrande's second name - probably also her mother's first name - and Catherine is the Protestant girl who invites Bertrande to the service.
10. Lea Salonga was part of the original London cast of 'Miss Saigon', starring as Kim, but she also took part in the 10th Anniversary Concert of 'Les Misérables' in the Royal Albert Hall. Which role did she play there?

Answer: Eponine

Lea Salonga played the part of Eponine at the anniversary concert and went on to reprise that role as well as that of Fantine on Broadway.
