Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which musical are these lyrics from? "He's outwardly respectable. I know. He cheats. At cards. His footprints are not found in any file at Scotland Yard's."

Answer: Cats

"Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity. He's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity. You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square. But when a crime's discovered, then Macavity's not there! He's outwardly respectable. I know. He cheats. At cards. His footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard's."
These lines originated from T S Eliot's poem, and they were used in the musical. "The Odessa Files" is a film with the soundtrack written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, not a musical.
2. Who sang these lines for the first time? "Don't cry for me, Argentina! The truth is I never left you all through my wild days, my mad existence! I kept my promise, don't keep your distance!"

Answer: Julie Covington

Though Elaine Page did the role of Evita originally in the London Cast, Patti LuPone made it her milestone role, and Madonna did the movie version, Julie Covington actually did the very first recording of "Evita." There was no staging---it was first released as a CD in 1976 with Colm Wilkinson as Che. In 1978, Harold Prince hired a new cast and staged it.
3. What musical are these lines from? "I've an unrest inside me, oh it's long I have had. Such an unrest inside me, and it's getting real bad. I'm sleepin' at night, and my heart beats so loud that I wake all dizzy and light, with a dreamin' and feelin' this ache. Such an unrest inside me, that I think I'll go mad."

Answer: Juno

"Juno" was based on the original Sean O'Casey play "Juno and the Paycock." It opened in the mid 1950's, but went out after 16 showings. With gay and happy musicals like "Showboat" out, critics considered Juno to be "too dark to be a musical". The soundtrack is so obscure that it is only available by the Fynsworth Alley label.

However, the song "I Wish It So" was recently made popular by Dawn Upshaw and you can still get the song on her CD "I Wish It So."
4. Fill in the blank: "Will you give all you can give so that our banner may advance? Some will fall and some will live, will you stand and take your chance? The blood of the martyrs will water the _____ of France!"

Answer: meadows

This is the scene from "Les Miserables" where the students are rallying the people to fight.
5. This question could be considered "common knowlege." Who wrote the music to "Porgy and Bess"?

Answer: George Gershwin

"Porgy and Bess" is one of the first musicals to be entirely performed by African-Americans. Because of this element, people found it to be controversial, but it is still considered a classic.
6. Where is this from? "They drink champagne, entertain tourists at their fine hotels and tell their servants 'Polish up the Mercedes'!"

Answer: Once On This Island

From the spicy opening "We Dance".
7. "The trumpets of Carthage resound! Here, Romans, now and tremble! Hark to our steps on the ground, hear the drums! Hannibal comes!" Which show is this familiar line from?

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

This is the rehearsal scene of "Hannibal" (the show within the show) that Christine triumphs in with the aria "Think of Me", after Carlotta is crushed by a mysterious falling set piece.
8. Where is this from? "Not a person seems to know, not a person seems to care. There is no one who believes a thing I say. Well, I'm fairly certain that at one time or other, great thinkers all feel this way!"

Answer: Seussical

This is where Horton the Elephant and JoJo are singing of their loneliness in the number "Alone in the Universe".
9. Here's another rookie question: "One short day in the Emerald City."

Answer: Wicked

This is the scene where Elphaba and Glinda are heading for the Emerald City to meet the Wizard.
10. As our little finale: "Anything but lonely, anything but only me. There's so much in life to share---what's the sense when no one else is there?"

Answer: Aspects of Love

This is the finale scene where Rose is begging George not to leave.
