Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, how many pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick? (Assuming the peppers were already, albeit improbably, pickled upon picking)

Answer: A quarter of a bushel

A 'peck' used to be a term of measurement referring to liquid or solid, but now it refers mostly to solid items. It can also be considered to be equal to 2 gallons or 8 quarts. Thanks to Dr. Math at the online Math Forum for the info!

Thank you to the player that pointed out that peppers would not be pickled when they were first picked, technically. Therefore, the realistic answer would be zero because pickled peppers cannot be picked because they would not be pickled until after they had been picked. However, I simply added that note to the question since that is the text of the famous tongue twister. Thank you Chillstatus!
2. I slit a sheet, a sheet I slit. Upon the slitted sheet I sit. If I have done this intentionally, what have I done? (Generally speaking with regards to industry or production... in other words, it is done on purpose.)

Answer: Cut strips of sheet metal

While 'slitting a sheet' could probably be used in reference to a lot of things, the most common technical meaning would refer to strips of sheet metal cut by a large machine and used for construction. The name of the machine is literally a "sheet slitter".

Slitting a bed sheet may also be a common usage for the term "slitting a sheet", however if you slit your bed sheet, it probably had an inherent purpose. Therefore, you would not be "ruining" your sheet as the answer option states.
3. Billy, Bob and Betty bought big blue and black balloons from the booming bazaar. Where did Billy, Bob and Betty go?

Answer: A street market

This question could be simplified by asking for the definition of 'bazaar'. A bazaar is technically defined as "a street lined with shops and stalls selling a variety of merchandise."
4. What would an imaginary menagerie manager imagining managing an imaginary menagerie be imagining?

Answer: Exotic animals

The keyword in this tongue twister is the word 'menagerie'. A menagerie is basically defined as a place where wild or exotic animals are kept for show or to be trained. Therefore, our menagerie owner would be thinking about animals.
5. If you sniped Mr. Stipe's wife and then swiped Mr. Stipe's wife's knife, what crimes would you have committed?

Answer: Assault and theft

If you sniped someone, that implies that you shot at them from quite a distance with a specialized rifle, committing an assault. Then you would have stolen the poor woman's cutlery right out of her kitchen.
6. How much could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? (FYI - "chuck" means to throw or remove.)

Answer: 700 pounds

The "Wall Street Journal" inquired of Richard Thomas, wildlife expert, to answer this very question. According to him, woodchucks can chuck about 35 cubic feet of dirt. So by his calculation, this would mean a woodchuck could probably chuck about 700 pounds of wood. This is, of course, depending on the motivation and ability of the woodchuck but in general, if a woodchuck COULD (not WOULD) chuck wood, it would probably be about 700 pounds worth.

While "chucking" by a woodchuck refers to digging, the amount of wood a woodchuck could chuck is purely hypothetical and was researched by the above mentioned wildlife expert solely to "answer" the famous tongue-twisting question. And since there is no optional answer stating "a woodchuck cannot or would not chuck wood", it can be assumed the answer is purely hypothetical.
7. If your sixth step sister slowly strummed her seventh stringed zither while she softly sang a symphony, what would she be playing?

Answer: A horizontally played instrument with 30 - 40 strings

A zither is a horizontal instrument with up to 40 strings stretched across a sound hole and can be played with the fingers, a pelcum or a bow. It can also have the strings vibrated by the wind like a harp.
8. If we saw many a manly anemone maul many enemy anemones, where would we be?

Answer: The ocean

An anemone is a small spiny creature exclusively found in aquatic habitats. (An anemone is also a flower that thrives in shady, temperate areas, but these blooms are not predators and do not maul anything, as sea anemones do.)
9. Old oily Ollie oils old oily Oldsmobiles. What is Ollie's profession?

Answer: Mechanic

An Oldsmobile is a car so if Ollie oils them, he is probably a mechanic.
10. If a pleasant place to place a plaice is a place where placing a plaice is pleasing, where is a pleasing place to place the plaice?

Answer: Plate

Since a plaice is a fish, I would recommend keeping it out of your pocket, desk and closet. A plaice is a common flat fish about 2 feet in length with a pattern of brown spots on its body.
