quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Witch's Curse" is the second name for which G&S comic opera?

Answer: Ruddigore

The witch's curse is that every Murgatroyd must commit a crime a day or they'll die a horrible death at the hands of their ancestors. Funnily enough, the lead, Riwen Murgatroyd works out that refusing to commit the crimes, preferring death, is tantamount to suicide, which is a crime. So the Murgatroyds needn't have died!
2. "The Grand Duke" is the name of a lesser-known G&S show. What's the other name for this musical?

Answer: The Statutory Duel

The "Statutory Duel" turns out to be a game of cards in which the loser has to leave town forever.
3. "The Lass that Loved a Sailor" is the alternative name for which popular opera?

Answer: HMS Pinafore

The title may seem at first to refer to the relationship between Josephine Corcoran and Ralph Rackstraw, but because of the twist at the end it refers to Little Buttercup and Captain Corcoran.
4. What is the other name for "Iolanthe"?

Answer: The Peer and the Peri

Fairies marrying politicians! Oh, what fun!
5. "The Pirates of Penzance" is one of the most popular G&S shows. What's its other name?

Answer: The Slave of Duty

The slave of duty is Frederick, who is bound to be a pirate after finding out that he was born on February 29th ... therefore, he's only 5 1/4!
6. What is the secondary title of "The Yeomen of the Guard"?

Answer: The Merryman and His Maid

Two particular songs in this opera ... well, you only have to listen to them to know the plot: "I Have a Song to Sing-O!" and "When a Wooer Goes A-Wooing".
7. "The Flowers of Progress" is the other name for which lesser known musical?

Answer: Utopia Limited

Utopia Limited is well described - the play is set in a beautiful Utopian society, which decides to 'modernise' itself... thus losing the beauty of such a place as Utopia.
8. "The Gondoliers" is a popular show set in Italy. What's its secondary name?

Answer: The King of Barataria

The King of Barataria is supposed to be one of the two male (obviously) leads, but it turns out to be someone else... who is in love with the Queen of Barataria, so it all works out for the best!
9. "Patience" is about a milkmaid who is loved by two different men, neither whom she can unselfishly marry. What's its other name?

Answer: Bunthorne's Bride

The irony in the second title is that Bunthorne doesn't get married!
10. "The Sorcerer" is a musical about, funnily enough, a sorcerer (John Wellington Wells, Esq). What's the other name?

Answer: There is none

"The Sorcerer" is really about an engaged couple who want the whole town to be in much as love as they are with each other. They ask John Wellington Wells to make a love potion they will give to all their wedding guests ... with disastrous consequences.
