Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Philemon and Baucis were a loving couple who didn't want to live without one another so they asked the gods to let them die at the same time. The gods granted their wish and changed them into what?

Answer: trees

Philemon and Baucis were the only humans to welcome in their poor house the gods Zeus and Hermes (disguised as mortals). The gods angered at the inhospitality of mankind, sent the floods on Earth but saved the old couple's hut and turned it into a temple.
2. Odysseus was so much in love with his wife Penelope that he rejected the love of a nymph whom he met during his lengthy wanderings. What was the nymph's name?

Answer: Calypso

Calypso offered him immortality and eternal youth. But Odysseus preferred to get back to his mortal wife, Penelope. The journey took him almost 10 years and is described in one of the greatest epic poems of all times, the "Odyssey" by Homerus.
3. Admetus, while making nuptial offerings to the gods, forgot about the goddess Artemis, who, offended, took vengeance by sending lethal snakes to his chamber. However, at the request of her brother Apollo, Artemis agreed to let him live on the condition that somebody else would die in his place. The person who gave away her life for him was his wife - what was her name?

Answer: Alcestis

Alcestis was rescued from the Underworld by Hercules who returned her to her husband.
4. Orpheus was so much in love with his wife, Eurydice, that when she died, he followed her into the Underworld. The god of the Underworld let him take her back under certain conditions. Did Orpheus fulfil them and get her back?

Answer: No

Orpheus didn't manage to get his wife back because he couldn't help to turn around and look at her on their way out of the Underworld. According to some myths, broken-hearted Orpheus never fell in love with any other woman again.
5. Hecuba, wife of Priam, king of Troy, was totally devoted to her husband and family. When almost all her family members got killed by the Achaeans (Greeks), the gods turned her into which animal?

Answer: dog

Hecuba and Priam had 19 children, including Paris and Hector. Hecuba, turned by the gods into a bitch, jumped into the sea and drowned herself.
