Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the Titaness Mnemosyne's name mean?

Answer: Memory

The Muses were the offspring of her and Zeus. They, the Muses, were originally thought to be only three: Melete ('Practice'), Mneme ('Memory') and Aeode ('Song'). Or, as those at Delphi would have it, Nete, Mese and Hypate - the top, middle and bottom strings of a lyre.
2. What was the muse Thalia identified with?

Answer: Comedy

As civilization progressed, so did the Muses' jobs. Hesiod made them nine goddesses, who guarded over the fine arts, music and more intellectual pursuits. Calliope took care of epic poetry, Melpomene was in charge of tragedy and Polymnia took charge of mime.
3. Who bore the Harpies?

Answer: Electra

The Harpies were hags who served under Hecate, who helped Hades run the underworld. Electra, daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, also bore the goddess Iris.
4. Who (more correctly what) is the Hydra's sibling?

Answer: Cerberus

Cerberus is the three-headed dog who was tricked by Hades into guarding the gates of the underworld. Although the more traditional version gave him three heads - one to see with, one to smell with, one to rip you apart with -, Hesiod gave him fifty.
5. Who are the daughters of Zeus and Themis?

Answer: The Horae

The Furies are thought to have sprung forth from the blood of Uranus that fell on Gaia, the Earth. The Graces' parentage are not agreed upon.
6. What does the name Oedipus mean?

Answer: Swollen foot

The king of Thebes, whose mother was Jocasta or Epicaste, as Homer would like it.
7. What did Hercules do with his children?

Answer: Killed them

This was brought on by a fit of madness and Hercules also killed his wife, Megara. As punishment, he had to do the Twelve Tasks.
8. Of what was Amulias king?

Answer: Alba Longa

He usurped the throne from his older brother Numitor and ordered Numitor's daughter, Ilia/Rhea Silvia, to become a Vestal Virgin. Ilia was, however, raped by Mars and her twin sons were named Remus and Romulus.
9. Who do Ker/Keres resemble?

Answer: The Furies

Wherever the Keres went, there went destruction and woe. No wonder they got jobs dragging dead souls through the gates of the Underworld.
10. When Ixion expressed interest in Hera, what did Zeus create so that Ixion might mate with it(or them)?

Answer: A cloud

The cloud he created was in Hera's image. The other answers are actual examples of his sex-crazed inventions.
11. What was Cephalus put on trial for?

Answer: Manslaughter

The victim was his wife. In Ovid's Metamorphose the entire sorry story is recounted.
12. Where did Orpheus's head, who kept on calling for Eurydice, end up?

Answer: Lesbos

Those who found it, won poetic skill by burying it and founding an oracle and shrine. So don't talk to a stranger, unless his head washes up on your front yard, calling for his wife.
13. Who ripped Orpheus apart after he declined their company?

Answer: Thracian Maenads

In the same fashion that Zagreus was ripped apart by the Titans. The Cretan god Zagreus had an important position in a sect that worshipped Orpheus.
14. By what name is Dionysus also known?

Answer: Bacchus

In Roman mythology, this Grecian god of wine and ecstatic liberation is associated with Father Liber who is an Italian god.
15. What was the name of the statue with which Pygmalion fell in love?

Answer: Galatea

Aphrodite took pity on him and made the statue come to life.
