This is danced by four couples in a square set. The head couples lead the dance, and side couples copy everything they do. The dance is usually either loved or hated, few people are indifferent to it.
2. First couples lead down the set, while second couples go up the outside, then go back and turn nearest arm with your contrary. Second couples lead up the set, while first couples go down the outside, then go back and turn left arm with your contrary. Ladies chain across the set. Half right and left through, followed by half promenade across the set. Which dance is this?

Answer: Devil's Dream

This is danced by as many couples as want to in a longways set. It is one of my favourite dances, and has a wonderful tune to which it is impossible to sit still.
3. Circle left. Into the middle and out. Grand chain for seven hands. Swing your new partner. What is this dance called?

Answer: Lucky Seven

This is danced by as many couples as want to in a circle. It's a good way of mixing people, although if there is a multiple of six couples in the circle it doesn't do that very well. In that case the caller will often tell people to do the grand chain for one more hand, and swing the eighth person.

Answer: Bridge of Athlone

This is usually danced in longways sets of five couples, although it can be done with four or six if necessary. The lines cross with men making arches first time, and the women making arches on the return.

Answer: Levi Jackson Rag

This is the only five couple dance I know which is danced in a horseshoe formation. First couple are at the top of the set looking down, and the other four couples stand beside their partners, two couples on each side, facing across the dance. If all goes well you should have your partner back at the end of the dance!
6. Top man gallops to the bottom of the set with his partner. Top man gallops back home with bottom lady. Bottom man gallops to the top of the set with top lady. Bottom man gallops back home with his partner. Strip the willow from both ends of the set. Top and bottom couples meet in the middle and make four arches. Everybody else casts, and leads through the arches back home. Everybody swing. What is this dance called?

Answer: The Willow Tree

This is danced by eight couples in a longways set. The middle couples can enjoy themselves clapping along to the music while the top and bottom couples gallop around retrieving their partners.
7. Into the middle and out - twice. Ballroom hold, chassé two steps in and out, dance around. Promenade around the ring. Men pass on to the the woman in front. Balance and swing new partners. What is the name of this dance?

Answer: Blaydon Races

This is danced in a circle by as many couples as want to. The tune is very well known, and it is common for the dancers to sing along while they are dancing.
8. Into the middle and out - twice. First couple join nearest hands, make an arch and lead around the set over the other couples. Grand chain around the set. Swing partners. Which dance is this?

Answer: Holmfirth Square

This is danced by four couples in a square set, and led by each couple in turn. Recorded music is often played seven times through, so on the fifth and sixth times through two couples make arches and lead over the other two couples. On the last time through everybody makes an arch and leads over nobody!

Answer: Nottingham Swing

This is danced in a longways set for as many couples as want to. It should be danced to a hop-step throughout.

Answer: Circassian Circle

This a circle dance for as many couples as want to. It is often danced progressively with the man going to swing the woman who was on his left rather than his original partner.
