Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My brother-in-law has just been promoted to Detective Chief Inspector in the Metropolitan Police Murder Squad, and he was telling me of a recent case where they employed the use of a 'labiomancy' expert. What was their special field?

Answer: Lip reading

Although he is a DCI he didn't actually tell me of a case like that. I actually saw it in an episode of 'Kojak', but he might have told me about it had he not signed the Official Secrets Act. Labiomancy, however, is lip reading and comes from the Latin 'labia' meaning lip and 'mancy' from the old Greek meaning divination.
2. I was out on a walk with my 14 children and 2 dogs when I spotted a creature. I then played a game where they had to guess what animal it was I saw. The only clue I gave them was that it was a 'labtebricole' creature. They guessed it after a while. What was the creature I saw?

Answer: Rabbit

Labtebricole means living in holes, and of the four choices I believe rabbits are the only ones that do. Wouldn't like to fall down a cow hole....anyway...
3. I was in a pub in Chester the other day when I got chatting to a guy opposite. After a while he asked me if I wanted to go to the 'laconicum' with him. I accepted and followed him...where did we end up?

Answer: Sauna

Laconicum is indeed an old Greek sauna, from the town of Laconia where the Spartans were from. Needless to say...I didn't stay long...not falling for that one again.
4. Whilst walking through my home town I came across a shop that was selling 'lekvar'. What type of shop was it?

Answer: Food shop

Lekvar is a sweet spread made from apricots or prunes. It comes from the Hungarian meaning jam.
5. Whilst away on holiday in Hawaii I met this attractive young lady in the hotel bar and asked her if she would like to come up to my room, and persuaded her with my 'lanai'. What was I tempting her with?

Answer: The view from my balcony

A lanai is a private balcony or veranda in a hotel room. It can also be a covered patio area of a house. The word comes from the Hawaiian language.
6. I was making dinner recently and I asked my daughter what she would like. She told me to make something 'lecithal'. What did I make?

Answer: Egg on toast

Lecithal, from the Greek 'lekithos', means having a yolk or pertaining to egg yolk specifically.
7. I met an old friend from school the other day and went for a drink. He was telling me that he was now a 'lexer' at university. What was he studying?

Answer: Law

A lexer is a law student. It can also be used to describe a lexical analyser or computer hacker language imputter.
8. Admitted to hospital not so long ago, I was told that I would have to have an operation as I had a 'lienal' problem. What was the operation going to be on?

Answer: My spleen

Lienal comes from the Latin 'lien' meaning spleen.
9. I have a weird friend who happily describes himself as a 'logophile'. What is his particular obsession?

Answer: Words

A logophile is the lover words. It comes from the Greek 'logos' meaning word and 'phile' meaning lover of.
10. My friend, Stephanie, has a particular hatred of going to bed because she suffers from 'lygophobia'. What particularly does she fear about going to bed?

Answer: Fear of darkness

Lygophobia is the fear of darkness. Its opposite, the love of darkness, (I have many vampiric friends like this) is lygophilia.
