Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'd see my wife, my Golde, looking like a rich man's wife/ With a proper double chin./ Supervising meals to her heart's delight."

Answer: Fiddler on the Roof

In his tour de force, "If I Were A Rich Man", the milkman Tevye expounds on how different his life would be, if he "were a biddy biddy rich, Yiddle-diddle-diddle-diddle man."
2. "Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels/ Doorbells and sleigh bells/ And schnitzel with noodles/ Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings/ These are a few of my favorite things."

Answer: The Sound of Music

In the original Broadway production, Maria sings "My Favorite Things" while in the Mother Abbess's office, as she's being sent off to become governess to the von Trapp children. Essentially, it's a list of what she can depend on when she is afraid or unhappy. In the movie, the song was moved to a scene with the children.
3. "Paris at my feet/ Paris in the dust/ And here I'm breaking bread/ With the upper crust!"

Answer: Les Miserables

Two of the slimiest people in Paris during the student rebellion of 1823, Monsieur and Madame Thenadier are opportunists of the highest order. No bit of villainy is below them, if they can profit from it. "Beggars at the Feast" is part of the Wedding Chorale, when the Thenadiers crash the wedding of Marius and Cosette.
4. "And we have some shepherd's pie peppered/ With actual shepherd on top!/ And I've just begun --/ Here's the politician, so oily/ It's served with a doily,/ Have one!"

Answer: Sweeney Todd

A fictional character, although there are those who insist he did exist, Sweeney Todd first saw the light of day as a villainous cutthroat barber in a penny dreadful, essentially the first "pulp fiction". Since having bodies piling up would cause questions, he convinced his neighbor, Mrs. Lovett, a pie maker always short of meat for her products, that here was meat for the taking.

The song "A Little Priest" lists a myriad of professions for those who came for a shave, and were never seen again.
5. "Fust come codfish chowder,/ Cooked in iron kettles,/ Onions floatin' on the top,/ Curlin' up in petals."

Answer: Carousel

Based on the play "Liliom", but transplanted to Maine as "Carousel", this musical from Rogers and Hammerstein includes "This Was a Real Nice Clambake", a paean to a Maine gathering, with all the townspeople at the shore cooking up a seafood feast.
6. "I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy/ Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty/ Oily, greasy, fleecy/ Shining, gleaming, streaming/ Flaxen, waxen/ Knotted, polka-dotted/ Twisted, beaded, braided/ Powdered, flowered, and confettied/ Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!"

Answer: Hair

The self-titled "Hair" is probably a "gimme", with everyone now the proud owner of an earworm! One of the first in the genre "rock musical", the clash of the hippie movement/sexual revolution and the Vietnam conflict in US history is vividly portrayed.
7. "I'm sellin' a bit o' milk an' cream./ Come sip it an' ye will vow/ That this is the finest milk an' cream/ That ever came out a cow./ Though finest it is, the price is small,/ With milk an' the cream alack!/ There's nothin' to do but sell it all./ The cow winna take it back."

Answer: Brigadoon

Among the denizens plying their trade in McConnachy Square is Meg the milkmaid. In her "Vendor's Call", you have to admit, she has a point!
8. "If you brought me diamonds,/ If you brought me pearls,/ If you brought me roses/ Like some other gents/ Might bring to other girls,/ It couldn't please me more/ Than the gift I see;/ A pineapple for me."

Answer: Cabaret

A sub-story in Cabaret is that of the gentle Jewish fruit vendor, Herr Schultz, who is wooing Fraulein Schneider, the owner of the boarding house where he lives. This sweet melody, "It Couldn't Please Me More", is centered around a simple gift of a pineapple, with no hint of the horrors on the horizon.
9. "I'd like to propose a toast./ Here's to the ladies who lunch./ Everybody laugh./ Lounging in their caftans and planning a brunch./ On their own behalf."

Answer: Company

The Google Dictionary 2nd definition for company is stated as "the fact or condition of being with another or others, especially in a way that provides friendship and enjoyment." This is a perfect description for the musical "Company", a study of the relationships of a group of friends getting together for the birthday of the only single member of the group. "Ladies Who Lunch" is a wry jab at the meaningless boredom of life centered around the rich and wealthy.
10. "And super heroes/ Come to feast/ To taste the flesh/ Not yet deceased/ And all I know/ Is still the beast is/ Feeding"

Answer: Rocky Horror Picture Show

"Superheroes", the next to the last song in the musical, follows the denouement through the alien Doctor Frank N. Furter's failure to achieve the ultimate party atmosphere, and being deposed. And there we see each of the characters moving towards a new understanding of themselves, but still not quite managing it.
