Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For starters, what is a leprechaun?

Answer: A mischievous male fairy of Irish folklore

Many Irish people dislike leprechauns because they have come to represent a number of negative stereotypes about Irish people.
2. We normally picture leprechauns in green suits today, but what color did they wear according to Gaelic tradition?

Answer: Red

The color shift seems to have happened around the turn of the 20th century, probably due to a growing association with Irish people and the color green, but older works of poetry and story always depict the leprechaun as wearing a red waistcoat. Some believe that solitary leprechauns wear red coats, while leprechauns who live in colonies wear green.
3. What do leprechauns do for a living?

Answer: They are cobblers

Legend says that leprechauns are the cobblers (or shoemakers) for all the fairy folk. They are often depicted with a leather apron, holding a shoe.
4. If a leprechaun is leaping, what is he likely to be doing?

Answer: Dancing a jig

A jig is a traditional Irish dance. According to legend leprechauns are cobblers because they do so much dancing that they are constantly wearing out their shoes!
5. How much gold is in a leprechaun's stash at the end of the rainbow?

Answer: One gold coin for every year of his life

The above answer stems from older Celtic myths sometimes stating that the queen of fairies gifts each fairy on their birthday. By this logic, you should hope to catch an old leprechaun!

Some sources say that leprechauns earn the gold in their pots through shoe-making. Other sources say they are guarding ancient treasure left by the Danes. Ancient poems and songs, which predate the other sources, cite the one gold coin for every year of their lives.
6. According to legend, how can you obtain the leprechaun's pot of gold?

Answer: By capturing him and not taking your eyes off him until you get your gold

This may be the origin of the leprechaun's trickery. Fairy law requires the leprechaun to be honest with you if captured, but only for as long as you look him in the eye. It does not forbid tricks, only lying, but as soon as you look away the leprechaun can vanish, lie to you, or anything else he can dream up.
7. What famous movie from 1959 follows a man who is granted three wishes by the king of the leprechauns and enjoys a feast in his kingdom?

Answer: Darby O'Gill and the Little People

This movie always seems to show up on cable near St. Patrick's day, so if you have memories of a crusty, drunken Irishman cavorting with leprechauns, you're remembering "Darby O'Gill".
8. There have been a series of horror movies featuring an evil leprechaun. The first, from 1993, starred what actress who later became famous on the TV show "Friends"?

Answer: Jennifer Aniston

This was Aniston's second film role. "Friends" began airing 2 years after "Leprechaun" was released.
9. On to a less frightening leprechaun every American child should know. Lucky, the cartoon leprechaun, is the mascot for what children's cereal?

Answer: Lucky Charms

As Lucky says in the commercial, "They're magically delicious!"
10. Finally, what other mythical creature is often confused with a leprechaun?

Answer: The Clurichaun

It is easy to see why the two are so often confused. Clurichaun are tiny drunken fairies who often play tricks on dishonest drunks. However they are not cobblers, do not have a pot of gold, and can not grant wishes.
