Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the apt name of the title character in the book "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"?

Answer: Quasimodo

Quasimodo is another name for the Second Sunday after Easter. It is the word that starts the Antiphon for that Sunday. It was also the Sunday in France during the Medieval period when babies could be left in the Church vestry for adoption.

Victor Hugo, then, drew on history, religion, and creativity to fittingly name his protagonist Quasimodo.
2. What is the word for a group of five babies born at the same time?

Answer: quintuplets

At the time of the birth of the Dionne Quintuplets there had been only one
recorded set of quintuplets born in North America. These earlier babies had died at birth.
3. What is the sound a duck makes?

Answer: quack

The Duck Tour in Philadelphia, gives "quackers" to the tourists which they are urged to sound by the bus/boat driver at different intervals on the street course and when entering the Delaware River. There are many residents in Old Towne Philadelphia who think Duck Boats are not all they are "quacked up" to be.

A particular resident of that area wrote a letter to the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper deploring the incessant noise ... "quacking".
4. Which of the following words could be used to describe drinking a beverage deeply?

Answer: quaff

My imagination takes me to a British Pub where I might more readily hear the term "quaff". It is an infrequently-used expression, particularly for the more youthful groups of pub crawlers.
5. What is the name of a case in which some or many arrows are carried?

Answer: quiver

My daughter-in-law, a teacher of High School German for over 25 years, gave me this interesting bit of information about the word "quiver". In Germany, a colloquial expression for a group of children is "a quiver of children".
6. Which word below best describes a state of enforced isolation?

Answer: quarantine

This term is more prominently used in the news today in association with groups detained because of their ethnicity during a country's war time, or war-captured enemies, than was previously the case. My first memory of this word comes from a time when our neighbor's child was diagnosed with Scarlet Fever and the Doctor posted a large sign on their front door: "QUARANTINED".

This is rarely seen in modern times.
7. Which of the following words best describes a large feather or a type of writing instrument?

Answer: quill

Having been taught the Palmer Method of handwriting, many of us from that period would quiver to think how long it would take to complete a quiz with a quill plucked from a goose or a swan. Come to think of it, it surely would be from a goose, as swan quills are more expensive.
8. What kind of disruptive action did the the Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat have?

Answer: quarrel

Although they are better known to have had a spat, spelling qspat would be inaccurate. But again, if you need to rhyme "side by side on the table sat", maybe qspat would do?
9. Which word best describes how your stomach might feel after an evening of heavy drinking at the local pub?

Answer: queasy

My quirky mind wanders and wonders if in the "Dry Period", partakers went to a Speak Queasy? Oh this is bad!
10. What do we call a short oral or written test?

Answer: quiz

Would you prefer a formal examination for which you could study, or would you prefer a "Pop Quiz"? Remembering those days of quizzes, one quivers.
