Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which actors originated the roles of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly in the 1975 premier of "Chicago"?

Answer: Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera

When "Chicago" opened in 1975, the pair already had impressive backgrounds. Verdon won her first Tony for best actress in 1960 for "Damn Yankees". (She had won previously for best supporting actress in "Can-Can".) Chita Rivera made a big splash as Anita in the original 1957 production of "West Side Story", although she did not win any awards.
2. Which of these musicals were choreographed by Bob Fosse?

Answer: "Pippin", "Sweet Charity" and "Chicago"

Fosse achieved renown as a director, screenwriter, and actor as well as choreographer. 1973 was a particularly memorable year, since he received a Tony Award for directing "Pippin", an Academy Award for directing "Cabaret", and an Emmy Award for directing "Liza with a Z". A very young Fosse can be seen dancing in the movie version of "Kiss Me Kate".
3. What actor was the first to receive six performance Tony awards, for roles in "Carousel", "Master Class", "Ragtime", "A Raisin in the Sun", "The Gershwins", and "Lady Day at the Emerson's Bar and Grill"?

Answer: Audra McDonald

Julie Christie also has six Tonys, but one was an honorary award rather than one given for a specific performance. McDonald had won three times by the time she was 28. She was the first person to win a Tony in all four acting categories. Angela Lansbury has won five times
4. On May 3, 1960, Jerry Orbach became the first actor to sing "Try to Remember", launching a run of 17,162 consecutive performances of what musical?

Answer: The Fantasticks

Of course, Orbach didn't stay with the show for the entire run. His many other accomplishments include creating the roles of Billy Flynn in "Chicago" and Julian Marsh in "42nd Street". "The Fantasticks" ran at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village for 42 years.

As of 2015, it was by far the longest running continuous performance in the United States and the longest-running musical in the world. The longest-running musical on Broadway is "Phantom of the Opera", which debuted in 1988 and was still running in 2015.

The world-wide record for longest-running performance goes to "The Mousetrap", by Agatha Christie. It debuted in 1952 and was still running in 2015, after 63 years and more than 25,000 performances.
5. Since she won her first Tony in 1999, Kristin Chenoweth has been a prominent actress in musical theater (as well as TV and film). As of 2015, which of the following roles has she NOT played?

Answer: Dolly Levi in "Hello, Dolly!"

Chenoweth won a Tony for her role as Sally. She was nominated in 2004 for her role as Glinda but lost to her co-star, Idina Menzel, who played Elphaba. She was nominated for a Tony Award and won a Drama Desk Award for her performance in the 2015 revival of "On the Twentieth Century".
6. What role was played on film by Marlon Brando and in various New York stage productions by Robert Alda, Jerry Orbach, Hugh O'Brien, and Peter Gallagher?

Answer: Sky Masterson in "Guys and Dolls"

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1959 with Robert Alda in the part. It was revived at the New York City Center with Sky being played by Orbach (1965) and O'Brien (1966). In 1992, a Broadway revival starred Gallagher as Sky and Nathan Lane as Nathan Detroit. Ewan McGregor played Sky at London's Piccadilly Theatre in 2005.
7. What musical theater star has won raves for her performances as the Witch in "Into the Woods", Dot/Marie in "Sunday in the Park with George", Mabel Normand in "Mack and Mabel", Emma in "Song and Dance", and Annie Oakley in "Annie Get Your Gun"? (She also starred in the movies "The Jerk", "Silent Movie", and "Annie".)

Answer: Bernadette Peters

In 1968, Peters won a Theatre World Award for her debut performance starring with Joel Grey in "George M!". That same year, she won a Drama Desk award for her off-Broadway performance in "Dames at Sea". In 2003, she received her seventh Tony Award nomination for her portrayal of Momma Rose in the Broadway revival of "Gypsy".
8. What tall (6'6.5") dancer choreographed "My One and Only", "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", "A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine", "The Will Rogers Follies", and "Grand Hotel"?

Answer: Tommy Tune

Tune won Tony Awards for best choreography and best direction of a musical in two consecutive years: for "Grand Hotel" in 1990 and "The Will Rogers Follies" in 1991. He starred opposite Twiggy in "My One and Only", a new musical written to incorporate music by George and Ira Gershwin. In 2015, Tune received a special Tony Award for lifetime achievement in the theatre.
9. Who starred on Broadway in "Camelot" and "My Fair Lady", but was replaced by other actresses in the film adaptations?

Answer: Julie Andrews

Andrews was replaced by Vanessa Redgrave ("Camelot") and Audrey Hepburn ("My Fair Lady"). Neither of these actresses had strong singing voices, and Hepburn's songs were dubbed by Marni Nixon. Andrews won an Academy Award for her starring role in "Mary Poppins". Many consider this a consolation prize for losing the role of Eliza Doolittle.
10. Which versatile star's resume includes playing a teen doctor on TV and a transgendered rock singer on Broadway, in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"?

Answer: Neil Patrick Harris

Harris played Dr. Doogie Howser on TV from 1989 to 1993. He also received four Emmy nominations for his performance as Barney Stinson in "How I Met Your Mother". In 2014, he received a Tony for the title role in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch". He has hosted the Tony Awards on Broadway in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
