Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mr. Sowerberry in "Oliver" worked in what profession?

Answer: Undertaker

"Such a look of melancholy I have never seen on a boy my dear", the hen-pecked Sowerberry tells his dragon of a wife. This was in the days when undertakers measured up, made the coffin, laid him out and got him underground as soon as possible. At least the client never complained!
2. The musical "Chess" had a most unusual storyline, which I believe added to its charm. Likewise there were some strange characters. One such character is Arbiter. What was his/her profession?

Answer: Referee

Yes, Referee. Arbiter is a play on the word arbitration, which is exactly what a referee does after all. Great, great show.
3. Monsieur Thenardier had what occupation in "Les Miserables"?

Answer: Innkeeper

He indeed was "The Master Of The House".
4. In "Fiddler On The Roof" we meet up with Avram. What does he do for a living?

Answer: Bookseller

Quite a difficult one is this, on that I would agree. He's the guy who brings the newspaper when they all discuss world events.
5. Ali Hakim carries out what profession in the musical "Oklahoma"?

Answer: Peddler

He weaved his magic around Ado Annie Carnes, the girl that 'Cain't Say No', which causes all sorts of musical mayhem.
6. "South Pacific" has a character called Joseph Cable. What does this guy do for a living?

Answer: Lieutenant

He is indeed Lt. Joseph Cable U.S.M.C. and, as the song goes, will join the firm of 'Cable, Cable, Cable...and Cable'. That last 'Cable' will be him.
7. Zach features highly in "A Chorus Line", but what's his job?

Answer: Director

In the stage production the mystery and suspense is maintained by never ever seeing Zach, the director. Sadly in the movie, we see him all the time. Not that Michael Douglas is not a good actor, but the movie lacked the drama of the stage production.
8. In the opening of "The Phantom Of The Opera", Monsieur Lefevre plays a man who is retiring from what position?

Answer: Manager

If you had a tortured soul living in the bowels of your theatre, wouldn't you retire as the manager?
9. Alfred P. Doolittle, father of Liza in "My Fair Lady" is "h'employed" in what profession?

Answer: Dustman

With a little bit of luck you got that right!
10. Finally, my favourite musical of all time -- "West Side Story". What occupation was enjoyed by the character Glad Hand?

Answer: Social worker

To quote the synopsis, "Glad Hand (John Astin), a 'square' social worker who has organized the dance, separates the warring factions in the middle of the gym floor, and naively announces to the "boys and girls" (or "kids") something special: a "get-together dance" to "make new friends" and "get closer to old ones." Nice thought guy, but never, never would it happen. Bye Folks, see you soon.
