Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first guest we see is Eos. She is laughing about her boyfriends and her siblings Helios (the Sun) and Selene (the Moon). This rosy-fingered lady is the goddess of what?

Answer: The Dawn

Eos was the goddess of the dawn. She rose into the sky at the start of each day, and with her light she banished the last traces of nighttime. She was shown either in her chariot or flying on wings. At one time she was in trouble with Aphrodite, who laid a curse on her. Since then, she is always chasing handsome young men and trying to entice them to be her boyfriend.
2. The next person at the party is a mortal lady named Europa. She is telling us about how Zeus abducted her while she was gathering flowers by the water. What animal did he pretend to be in order to win her over?

Answer: A white bull

Though married to Hera, Zeus always had an eye for beautiful ladies. Europa was a gorgeous princess of Tyre. One day, as she and her maids were picking flowers, Zeus morphed into a white bull and laid at her feet. Enchanted, she climbed on his back.

He then swam away with her, changed back to his form, and eventually consummated his love. He left her behind with three children from the union and a number of beautiful and powerful gifts from the gods.
3. We come next to a nymph named Echo. She could not talk because she was cursed by Hera to lose her own voice. We learned from the chatter around her, however, that she was still pining for her love. Who was this handsome mortal who could only love himself?

Answer: Narcissus

Echo was a pretty nymph who aided Zeus by stopping Hera and chatting with her while her husband carried on affairs. When she found out, Hera angrily cursed Echo by taking away her voice and only allowing her to repeat the last bit of someone else's words. One day, Echo saw Narcissus in the woods. Falling in love with him, she kept repeating his last few words, but he would have nothing to do with her. Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection and died of longing for it. Echo then grieved herself to death, leaving only her voice behind.
4. The next person at the gathering is named Euphrosyne. She says her name means "Joyfulness" and she talks about her sisters Thalia and Aglaea. True or False: Together they are known as the Three Muses.

Answer: False

The three sisters, immortal daughters of Zeus, are called the Three Charities, or, in Roman terms, the Three Graces. They represented charm, beauty, human creativity, goodwill, and fertility. They are connected with festivities and it was very important for them to be entertained at these events.
5. The next person at the table was named Echidna and called herself "mother of monsters". She spoke about her partner Typhon and their various monstrous children. I definitely noticed that she was human from the waist up. But what animal was her lower half?

Answer: Serpent

Echidna was a half-woman, half-serpent creature. She was the wife of Typhon, who was a hideous monster with a hundred dragons' heads. She was rumored to have a taste for raw human flesh. Echidna mothered many of the mythological monsters. These included the dragon who protected the Golden Apples, the Hydra, the Chimera, and the hound, Cerberus.
6. We then turn to the next person and learn he is a god named Erebus. He said he was the god of darkness of night, darkness of caves, and darkness of the underworld. What is the name of this Greek underworld?

Answer: Hades

Erebus was created from the primordial god named Chaos and is the god of darkness. He works with his fellow god Nyx (god of the night) to bring darkness to the world each day. He is known to spread mists upon the heavens and to turn dreams into nightmares. Erebus' darkness even possessed Hades and helped turn him into the dark god of the dead in the underworld that is also named Hades.
7. We turn to the next person and find it is a woman named Electra. She says she is the daughter of King Agamemnon and is proud that she avenged his death. Who did she help kill in retaliation for her dad's murder?

Answer: Her mother, Clytemnestra

Electra was the daughter of King Agamemnon and his wife Clytemnestra. When her father returned from the Trojan War he was murdered by Clytemnestra and her lover. Electra was horrified and sent her brother, Orestes, away for his own safety. For years she plotted revenge against her mother.

When Orestes turned twenty, he joined Electra in a scheme where they tricked their mother and then killed her. Orestes took the throne and married Electra off to his best friend, Pylades.
8. The following person we chat with tells us her name is Euterpe and she represents lyric poetry. She says she is a member a group of inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and arts. What is the group?

Answer: The Muses

The Muses were said to be nine beautiful, smart women associated with arts and sciences. Euterpe, whose name means "Giving Much Delight" is the muse of lyric poetry. Other muses were associated with history, erotic poetry, epic poetry, tragedy, hymns, choral song, comedy, and astronomy.

The role of these Muses was to inspire the artist in the appropriate medium. They were frequent visitors to celebrations at Mount Olympus and enjoyed entertaining the guests.
9. We then meet a man who said his name is Eurystheus and he was king of Tiryns. However, all he talked about were the twelve labors he ordered someone to accomplish. Who was the name of the person who had to do things like slay a lion, capture a doe, or clean out a filthy stable?

Answer: Heracles

Eurystheus was a king who ruled over Tiryns and Mycenae, and was also an antagonist of Heracles. Hera and Zeus had been arguing over who should be the rightful king between Zeus' son Heracles and Hera's favorite, Eurystheus. Due to some manipulating of the gods, Eurystheus became king. Years later, Hera made Heracles kill his own family and then go to Tiryns and work for Eurystheus.

When Heracles got to Tiryns he was ordered, by Eurystheus, to complete twelve extremely difficult tasks. Instead of dying during the trials, Heracles accomplished them and showed Eurystheus to be a coward and liar.
10. The next guest we meet is a handsome young man who says his name is Eros and he is the god of love. He tells us his mother is Aphrodite and he enjoys accompanying her. He has a special weapon that he uses to help him make people fall in love. What is it?

Answer: Bow and arrow

Eros was the son of Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. He and his mother frequently travel together and he often acted upon her orders. Eros used a bow and arrow to aid him in his tasks. Golden arrows caused individuals to fall in love while lead arrows caused indifference.

He was thought to be very mischievous. He later fell in love himself and married Psyche, the goddess of the soul.
