Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Greek myth, Pyrrha and this person were instructed by Prometheus to build an ark. After 9 days, they floated to safety from the ensuing flood. Who was the Greek-version of Noah?

Answer: Deucalion

The flood myth is actually a very common theme throughout world myth, probably first started by the Sumerians with their Utnapishtim. He also built an ark...coincidence? I think not...
2. Who were the group of magicians of Greece, instituting the first Olympic games?

Answer: Dactyls

The term 'dactyl' refers to fingers, digits often used to produce magic tricks!
3. What was the false name Helen of Troy used as she travelled to Rhodes?

Answer: Dendritis

What an awful name to choose, dendritis, now a name for a scalp problem. The root for this word is tree, however.
4. Who was the son of Hermes and the god of cows?

Answer: Daphnis

He is not to be confused with Daphne, the lovely nymph who was transformed into a laurel tree while escaping the amorous Apollo.
5. Who was the architect for King Minos?

Answer: Daedalus

Daedalus is probably more famous as the father of the foolish Icarus who attempted to escape imprisonment with wings that his father had created. Poor Icarus flew too close to the sun, however, and the wax that held the feathers together in the wings melted...he fell into the sea and died.

They had been imprisoned by King Minos who was upset that Theseus had killed his son, the Minotaur. A soap opera to be sure...
6. Who was the sister of Pygmalion?

Answer: Dido

Dido, of "Dido and Aeneas" fame, was the sister of Pygmalion, the topic of a Shaw play (and the film "My Fair Lady" too!)
7. What was the name of the old gardener of Odysseus, who took care of the palace after he left?

Answer: Dolius

Old Dolius the faithful waited the entire time for Odysseus to get back...wouldn't you love to have a gardener like that?
8. What name of the tribe from Chios, responsible for buying the first slaves, henceforth encouraging 'slave-trade' in the vicinity?

Answer: Drimacus

Chios is one of the islands in the Aegean. Unfortunately it is partially known for this slave origin, though certainly the first slaves weren't held here...slavery is much more ancient.
9. Who was the Mother-Goddess and unfortunate victim of a shady kidnapping?

Answer: Demeter

The 'shady' kidnapping occurred when old Hades, lord of hell, decided he was fond of the daughter of Demeter, Persephone. You probably know the rest of the story!
10. Who was the goddess worshipped for fertility, with her oldest monument still located in Capua?

Answer: Diana

Diana is also known as the Artemis, the goddess of the hunt from Greek myth. Artemis was also symbolized at the temple of Ephesus as the goddess of childbirth. Thank you for trying this quiz...please give my other quizzes on this topic a try if you feel so inclined!
