Bernstein composed the music and the book and lyrics were written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. It opened on Broadway in 1944 at the Adelphi theatre. It also had revivals in 1971 and 1998.

'Oklahoma!' is one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most well known musicals, and also one of the most performed shows. It opened in New York in 1943, and there have been many revivals and tours since then. In 1955 it was made into a musical starring Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones (in her film debut) in the roles of Curly and Laurey.
