Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Just about everyone knows that Michael Crawford originated the role of the Phantom in London. But fewer people know that Andrew Lloyd Webber presented a draft form of the first act to people at his property in Sydmonton. Who played the role of the Phantom for this performance?

Answer: Colm Wilkinson

And although Colm would go on to star in the London production of "Les Miserables," he would not return to the role of the Phantom until he was cast for the Toronto production's opening. And actually, most of the people who appeared in the Sydmonton production were Royal Shakespeare Company performers committed to doing "Les Miserables."
2. Andrew Lloyd Webber was in the middle of working on a new musical when it was suggested to him that he write "Phantom of the Opera" instead. Which musical was 'put off' for "Phantom"?

Answer: Aspects of Love

And actually, the song "Music of the Night" was taken from his draft of "Aspects of Love" and inserted into the show. Hal Prince, who would later direct the musical, never saw the Sydmonton performance.
3. Before the show went into rehearsals for the London production, several musical videos were made. Which of the following songs did NOT have a musical video made for it?

Answer: Angel of Music

"The Phantom of the Opera" was done as a rock song with singer Steve Harley and Sarah Brightman. The lyrics at the beginning of the song were changed from those that would later end up in the musical. "All I Ask of You" (sung by Sarah Brightman and Cliff Richards) and was done in a very NOT musical-theatre way - funny computer-added backgrounds were added. "Music of the Night" was the one which came closest to being like the staged musical - Michael Crawford sang the role with costume and sets very much like those in the musical.
4. Which character had a section of the song removed when the show opened on Broadway?

Answer: Raoul in "Wandering Child"

Originally written as a trio which can be heard in the original London cast recording, Raoul's part was cut in the move to New York as Andrew Lloyd Webber thought that the focus of the song should be on the relationship between Christine and the Phantom.

The trio, however, was kept in the London production. Also, in the London recording, Piangi is not in the first managers' scene - only Carlotta is. However, his part was later added and can be heard on the Toronto recording.
5. A large controversy erupted as negotiations were underway to start a production in New York. What was the result of the negotiations with the union in New York?

Answer: Ann Crumb being cast as Rose in "Aspects of Love"

The New York union was upset that Andrew Lloyd Webber was bringing his wife to New York to assume the role when there were many women in the United States who could perform the role (and better, some thought). However, Lloyd Webber was adamant that Sarah be allowed to perform and agreed that an American would be given the lead in his next musical when it opened in London.

The next musical ended up being "Aspects of Love" and Ann Crumb got the role. For those who like "Les Miserables," Ann Crumb can be heard on the original Broadway cast recording as the factory girl who fights with Fantine over Fantine's letter.
6. In what theatre did Lloyd Webber want "Phantom" to open in London?

Answer: The Palace

Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group actually owned the Palace. However, Cameron Mackintosh had grabbed the theatre a couple years prior for "Les Miserables." He then had to search London for a suitable theatre and came up with Her Majesty's which was a bit smaller.

Her Majesty's theatre was built in 1897 and was the only theatre in London's West End that had the original machinery still under the stage. Incidentally, this was also the site for Lloyd Webber's failed 1975 musical "Jeeves" (the 'reworked' version of the musical, "By Jeeves" was also a flop).
7. Which of the following was a production change used for the touring show in the United States?

Answer: candelabras coming from the wings

Having the candelabras come up from under the stage means that that many more traps must be added to the stage. By having them come from the wings the stage doesn't need to be as complicated.
8. Which actor/actress won a Tony for their portrayal of a character in the Broadway production?

Answer: Judy Kaye

Judy Kaye won for her portrayal of the diva, Carlotta Guidicelli. Cris Groenendaal wasn't nominated for his portrayal of Andre and would later go on to star as the Phantom in Canada. "Phantom" also won Tony awards for Best Actor in a Musical (Michael Crawford), Best Musical, Best Director of a Musical (Hal Prince), Best Scenic Designer (Maria Björnson), Best Costume Design (Maria Björnson), and Best Lighting Designer (Andrew Bridge).

It was also nominated for Best Choreographer (Gillian Lynne), Best Score for a Musical (Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe), and Best Book of a Musical (Richard Stilgoe and Andrew Lloyd Webber). Also, a note about the spelling of Guidicelli: It was originally spelled Giudicelli but somewhere before London opened it was spelled incorrectly and has been ever since.
9. The Toronto production seemed to be the one which 'gave back' to the fans the most. The epitome of this was the 9th anniversary performance in which five men alternated the role of the Phantom throughout the show. Which of these men was not a cast member for that performance?

Answer: Colm Wilkinson

Although each of these men did in fact play the role in Toronto, Colm Wilkinson was unable to join the festivities. (It is rumored that he did not want to 'share' the role with the five men who did perform.) Also alternating in the role that night were Jeff Hyslop (famous for the children's show "Today's Special") and Cris Groenendaal.

The audience was not told which man sang which part of the show because there was a contest where the audience was supposed to guess which man did what part.
10. This actress would go on to become a big star in "Party of Five." However, she got her big break as a member of the ballet corps in Toronto's production.

Answer: Neve Campbell

Neve Campbell was, at the time, the youngest person cast in the show - ever. She also understudied the role of Meg.
11. Toronto's production certainly was memorable. One of the most controversial casting decisions was to ask a member of the rock group KISS to play the title role. Which band member joined the cast of Toronto's "Phantom of the Opera"?

Answer: Paul Stanley

Although many people did not enjoy this, Paul Stanley started out as a 'novelty' for the fans but he approached the role professionally and grew both vocally and acting-wise in the role. On a related note, after Colm Wilkinson left the role there were many rumors that singer Meatloaf would be approached for the role.
12. Although there are many cast recordings of the show, only one was recorded live. Which cast was it?

Answer: Sweden

There have also been recordings of the Basel cast (VERY small highlights version with only a couple songs), Mexico, Korea, three Japanese recordings, Netherlands and Vienna. The Toronto, Mexico, Korean, Hamburg and Netherlands versions are normal highlights CDs.

The Toronto, Mexico and Hamburg recordings also have the "Hannibal" section in its entirety (which cannot be found on the original London cast recording).
13. In which language could you have heard the Basel production?

Answer: English

Although Switzerland has many French and Italian speakers, the Basel production alternated performances in German and English (6 of the eight performances a week were German).
14. Which of the following characters is first seen in the 1881 time?

Answer: Carlotta

Carlotta comes out holding the severed head for the rehearsal for "Hannibal." She then begins her lines "This trophy/from our saviours/from our saviours/from the enslaving force of Rome!" Then the ensemble go on stage followed by the ballet corps and slave master.
15. Lefevre's line about "if you need me, I'll be in Frankfurt" is usually unchanged except for which production?

Answer: Hamburg

The Hamburg cast changed the line to say that he was going to Mallorca. It's one of Spain's Balerean Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca), just off the coast in the Mediterranean. This is where many Germans spend their holidays. I guess Frankfurt was just too close to the Germans so it wouldn't make sense for Lefevre to be 'going' to Frankfurt.

Although the show is set in Paris throughout the world so I don't know how it changes anything.
