Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do tame rabbits live in?

Answer: a hutch

Lodges are what beavers live in. Pigs live in sties.
2. Where do wild rabbits live?

Answer: a burrow

Wild rabbits may also be said to live in a hole. Hares live in lairs. An earth is one of the terms for what a fox lives in.
3. What is home to a cowboy?

Answer: a ranch

Log-cabins are typical of lumberjacks. Wigwams are what some Native Americans lived in. The essence of a cowboy is not that he breeds horses or runs a stud-farm. He is an animal herder who tends cattle on ranches.
4. Which of these places would be home to an anchorite?

Answer: a hermit's cell

Convents are where friars or sisters live. Cloister might be a synonym for a convent or for a monastery. A monastery is now the term for what monks live in. Monks can be male or female. In the latter case their monastery might be called a nunnery (archaic). Ironically enough the word monastery ("monasterion") originally referred to religious people living in isolation, "alone" (monos=one).

But somehow people in isolation were admired by followers, asked for advice, and looked up at as examples. Hermits often became cenobites; people sharing meals, living in a monastic community.

But anchorites on principle are not cenobites and stay in isolation. So a hermit's cell or a hermitage is where they belong.
5. Which of these is the most fitting word for the sort of building a (religious) recluse lives in?

Answer: a hermitage

A hut is a small simple building , sometimes made of mud and grass.
A cabin is also a small simple house, though less primitive than a hut. It can also be a small room in an aircraft or a boat.
Recluses in the general sense of the word are people who live alone and avoid going outside or talking to other people.
In the narrow sense of the words recluses are hermits living apart from the rest of society for religious reasons. Historically speaking they sometimes lived in caves or even in trees. But when they live in a constructed building the proper name for their solitary residence is
a hermitage.
A refuge always implies that people are sheltering from a certain danger. In Middle-Ages monks who had to travel found shelter from the dangers of the road in refuges. Most important cities had "refuges" for the various religious orders. In times of social disorder whole monasteries were on the run and moved to the closest safe refuge available.
6. What is a possible term for the sort of place that has been established specifically so that battered women may find shelter from their aggressive husbands?

Answer: a refuge

One meaning of asylum is: mental hospital. Asylum is however also the term for the safe haven given by governments to foreigners who have been forced to leave their own countries for political reasons. Because of the growing number of economical refugees, the term asylum seeker has been somewhat discredited, and public opinion has grown suspicious of such "asylum seekers".
7. Which of these is the most specific name for the habitation of a fox?

Answer: an earth

Foxes can be said to live in dens, but the more common term in the UK is an earth.

Beavers build and live in lodges.
A kennel (from Greek kunos dog) is what dogs may live in.
A lair is what a hare lies in.
8. Snakes live in what kind of place?

Answer: a nest

Nest is of course also the word for what birds have as their homes.
9. What do pigs live in?

Answer: a sty

The specific word for what cows live in is a cow-shed. Horses live in stables or stalls.
10. Which of these words refers to a large old house in the country with land belonging to it?

Answer: manor

A villa need not be old and may have been built on a rather small plot of land. Nowadays villas are typical of either the countryside or the seaside, esp. in southern Europe, and they often can be rented for holidays.
A chalet is neither large nor old. It is originally a small wooden house found in mountainous areas and is typically associated with Switzerland.
Manor derives from French manoir.
