Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pictographs, engravings, petroglyphs, and sculptures can all be types of rock art, true or false?

Answer: true

Engravings are cut into the surface of rock. Petroglyphs are hammered into rock using harder stone. Sculptures are free-standing art, or cut in relief. Pictographs, my favorite, are drawn or painted images made using pigments. Geoglyphs are art on the surface of the landscape. I don't want to make this a dull, technical quiz, so I hope this helps you visualize the kinds of rock art without appearing to be giving you a lecture.
2. When were the engravings in the cave near Cussac, France discovered?

Answer: Sept. 20, 2000

They were found by spelunker Marc Delluc, in a previously unknown cave near the village of Cussac in southwestern France. On the walls, he discovered wonderfully detailed engravings of mammoths, ibex, birds, human figures, horses, among others.
3. Where is the world's largest collection of geoglyphs found?

Answer: Atacama Desert in northern Chile

Bhimbetka, India is home to pictographs of large cat-like animals and horsemen. The cave at Altxerri, Spain has engravings of fox and reindeer. There are over 5,000 geoglyphs to be found in Chile's Atacama Desert. Southwestern France has several caves of pictographs.
4. How long is the world's longest geoglyph, the 'Giant of the Atacama'?

Answer: about 390 feet

It is the figure of a human and is more than 280 feet long.
5. Where is North America's largest rock art found?

Answer: Blythe, California

North America's largest rock art is a 171-foot tall geoglyph of a man found at Blythe, California.
6. What was found on the cave walls at Lascaux, France?

Answer: horses and cattle

The beautiful pictographs at Lascaux were discovered by a 17-year old boy, Marcel Ravidat, and his friends, in a cave in southwestern France.
7. What year did Marcel Ravidat discover the cave art at Lascaux?

Answer: 1940

He discovered the cave at Lascaux in September, 1940.
8. How long ago were the pictographs at Lascaux thought to have been painted?

Answer: 17,000 years ago

They were painted by very skilled artists in the Ice Age.
9. Where in the South Pacific are hundreds of Moai, ancestor statues, found?

Answer: Easter Island

They were carved from soft volcanic rock.
10. Finally, let's finish with a fun question, after such a difficult quiz. What is a spelunker?

Answer: cave explorer

A spelunker, as you all well know, is a person who likes to explore caves. While they could possibly be a Brainac, ill-mannered, or mentally challenged, it's not part of the actual definition, now is it? If you'd like some websites on rock art, just message me. I'll be glad to send you some back.
