Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marc Chagall, the famous painter, was also a master of which other medium?

Answer: Stained glass

When I think of Chagall's work I imagine people floating above odd looking landscapes, something like a dream. In fact, Chagall's often bizarre paintings were often inspired by dreams. I sometimes consider his work to be even more surreal than the work of the self-named Surrealists...
2. Which of the following items has not been 'wrapped' by Christo?

Answer: Erictheum

The Erictheum is one of the ancient Greek temples to be found upon the Acropolis in Athens...Christo has not considered wrapping that ancient temple. He did however 'wrap' a long swath of the Australian coast, not to mention Pont Neuf and the Reichstag. Christo's last name is Javacheff, he was born in Bulgaria but eventually made his way to U.S. citizenship. Perhaps his most spectacular project was his 24-mile fabric fence in Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, which eventually ran into the sea.
3. Joseph Cornell is famous for placing his surrealistic dioramas into which objects?

Answer: Wooden boxes

Cornell specialized in wonderful little assemblages contained within wooden boxes. These little 'menageries' were often made up of random objects with no special relationship, but when assembled together the objects seemed to resonate as a greater whole.
4. Dix, Grosz and Kokoschka can all be associated with what word?

Answer: Degenerate

They were all denounced as 'degenerate' artists by the fascist Nazis when they came to power in Germany. These artists, among others, were repressed and even struggled against at various times. Kokoschka did his famous 'Portrait of a Degenerate Artist' in honor of this regrettable period of art history.
5. Which modern artist was the coiner of the term 'Art Brut', a good descriptive term for his 'primitive' style of art?

Answer: Jean Dubuffet

Art Brut means 'crude art' and is used to describe non-establishment art, as created by the mentally unstable or by children or other non-professionally trained individuals.
6. Which modern artist is sometimes compared to Hopper for his tendency to display the anxiety, insecurity and loneliness of middle America?

Answer: Eric Fischl

Fischl created a stir in 2002 with a bronze sculpture of a nude woman helplessly falling, in memory of the destruction of the WTC on 9/11/01. The woman is represented as if she had jumped from the top of one of the towers, as many people sadly did to escape the smoke and fire during 9/11.

When Fischl's work was displayed in New York City it drew angry complaints and protests, and the work was finally removed from public viewing.
7. Japanese sculptor Katsura Funakoshi carves his realistic human figures from what type of wood?

Answer: Camphor

His work has a nice, fragrant smell I'm sure! The camphor tree is a sacred tree in Japan.
8. What is the German family eating in the blatantly political photomontage called 'Hurrah, die Butter ist alle!' by John Heartfield?

Answer: Bicycle

This is one of John Heartfield's anti-Nazi propaganda posters for which he became famous during the 1930s. By the end of the 30s his anti-fascist and anti-nationalistic works got him tossed out of his native land, he lived out the last 12 years of his life in London.
9. Eva Hesse, who tragically died of a brain tumor at the tender age of 34, worked frequently with which of the following mediums in her sculpture?

Answer: fibreglass

Eva Hesse's work is fascinating, her forms are not representational but are visually appealing and texturally multi-faceted.
10. Walter de Maria filled an entire room in a New York gallery with what substance?

Answer: soil

Not your most common sight in a large city like New York, this exhibit created a sensation, which many modern artists are wont to do.
