The Lion King - The Musical Trivia Quiz

This short quiz is based on the best play I've seen in The West End over the past few years. If you've seen the movie, you will probably still do well on this quiz, but you may struggle on some of the questions! Good Luck.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy one to start! Which famous musician worked with Tim Rice in composing the music and writing the lyrics for the stage version of this classic Disney film?

Answer: Elton John

Elton and Tim wrote 3 new songs, comical and character driven, to add to the already wonderful score.
2. Which character sings the song 'The Morning Report'?

Answer: Zazu

This is a very comical song, with Zazu telling Mufasa all the latest news, giving a young Simba his first opportunity to practice pouncing on prey!
3. What is Timon and Pumbaa's motto?

Answer: Hakuna Matata

This has to be one of the most famous songs from both the film and the musical, and acts as the divide between the two parts of the play.
4. Which song opens the second act of the musical?

Answer: One By One

The first act ends with 'Hakuna Matata', a very happy, jovial song. In compete contrast, the second act opens with 'One By One', a song sung in African by a choral group, telling of how they need to reamin strong, despite their king just having been killed.
5. A number of songs in the play feature the Hyenas, particularly Shenzi and Banzai. However, Ed is heard and credited as singing in only one of the songs, but which one?

Answer: Chow Down

Ed is the stupid one of the three hyenas named in the play, and only features in 'Chow Down', with his contribution being a mere "Huh?" early on in the song, and a "Uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-hu" near the end!
6. Which of the characters was portrayed on stage simply by using a 5ft tall hand puppet, with an actor operating the puppet with one hand in his head, the other in one arm?

Answer: Timon

In my opinion, this was a very clever performance. Despite being able to clearly see the guy operating Timon, once the action begins, he just disappears into the backgorund, with all your focus being on the character he is holding.
7. The song 'The Madness of King Scar' features Scar talking to his hyenas, with Zazu and one other character present. Who else is present and takes part in this song?

Answer: Nala

It is during this track that King Scar starts to lose control of the hyenas, and realises he needs a Queen to help him rule. He decides Nala would be ideal, but she refuses.
8. One of the most moving songs in the Musical is 'Shadowland' performed by Nala. It features vocals in English and Zulu. What does the following line sung at the start mean? "Fatshe leso lea halalela."

Answer: This land of our ancestors is holy

Many songs feature African language lyrics, and these help add to the creation of the correct atmosphere and environment for the telling of this tale.
9. The song 'Circle of Life' features as the opening song and the closing song of the musical. The final song is performed by all the characters, but which character sings the opening song?

Answer: Rafiki

Rafiki opens this play, after an introduction of African drums and a strong musical accompaniment.
10. A tough one to end! What is the name of the person responsible for creating and writing all the South African style choruses?

Answer: Lebo M

In the film, these South African influenced choruses were only background, but for the musical they were cleverly transformed into principal parts, holding the entire play together.
