Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start from the beginning. What is the first animal to appear on stage during the 'Circle of Life' scene that opens the show?

Answer: Giraffe

A giraffe enters from stage right, to be followed by leaping gazelles, zebra, and finally the elephant, who lumbers on stage from the audience midway through the song.
2. When Mufasa and Simba are talking atop Pride Rock just after the 'Grasslands Chant' song, Simba asks his dad to chase what animal away?

Answer: Buzzards

Simba sees a flock of buzzards, to which he says "They're scary, why don't you chase them away?" Mufasa responds, "I don't have to, Simba. They're just doing their job," which allows the King to explain to his son that we're all connected in the great Circle of Life.
3. How many brightly colored giraffe puppets appear during the 'I Just Can't Wait to be King' scene?

Answer: four

There are four wildly colored giraffe puppets, which rank as the tallest in the show at 18 feet. They bow over the orchestra pit at the song's conclusion, much to the delight of those sitting in the front rows.
4. During which song or scene does the audience see Mufasa take his mask off for the only time in the show?

Answer: They Live in You

Mufasa removes his mask off during the 'They Live in You' scene, a very symbolic act which enables him to have a heart-to-heart talk with Simba not as a king, but as a father.
5. What is the name of the song featured in the colorful scene that begins Act II of "The Lion King"?

Answer: One by One

'One by One' features bright African costumes, colorful bird kites being flown by actors stationed in the audience, and lively dancing. It is an Entr'acte piece, which means it begins as the audience is returning to their seats from the intermission.
6. Which of the following events that occurred in 'The Lion King' movie did NOT occur in the Broadway musical adaptation?

Answer: Zazu sings 'I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts'

Zazu does not sing 'I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts', as he does in the film, presumably because Disney was not able to secure the rights to the song. Instead, Scar goes on to lament about his emptiness as king.
7. During the 'Waterfall' scene in which Timon is swept downstream, what does he drag out of the river?

Answer: a fish

Timon drags a fish out of the water. He tosses to Pumbaa, who catches it in his mouth - to the audience's delight.
8. After which of the following songs is there no scheduled pause for audience applause?

Answer: Endless Night

At the final note of Simba's soliloquy 'Endless Night', Simba freezes, and Rafiki heads to her tree to reveal that Simba is indeed alive, and then cuts quickly to another scene of Nala chasing Pumbaa. There is no applause after 'Endless Night', which is unfortunate since it's one of the strongest vocal performances offered in the entire show.
9. What two animals walk out on stage during the interlude between 'Be Prepared' and the wildebeest stampede?

Answer: cheetah and giraffe

The giraffe enters from stage left, meandering cautiously across the stage, as the cheetah enters from stage right. It spots the giraffe and slowly turns around to stalk it. It is interesting to note that this scene, along with the shadow puppets and the added scene of Zazu apologizing to Mufasa, were added because of the enormous length of time (over three minutes) needed to set up the technically complex wildebeest stampede.
10. What is Nala's mother Sarafina's only spoken word in the entire musical?

Answer: Sarabi?

Sarafina's only line, "Sarabi?" comes when cub Nala asks her mom if she can go with Simba to the 'waterhole'. Sarafina defers to Simba's mom to make the decision; she,o of course, says it's all right as long as Zazu goes with them.
