The Lyrics of "Phantom of the Opera" Quiz

'Think of Me' is the first song of the musical, which begins during a dress rehearsal for the opera 'Hannibal'. The song is first started by Carlotta, but she quits before the troupe's performance, and Christine steps in to sing. The line in the question comes in the middle of the song, as follows:

"When you'll find that once again you long to take your heart back and be free...If you ever find a moment, spare a thought for me. We never said our love was evergreen or as unchanging as the sea. But if you can still remember, stop and think of me."

The lines "Don't think about the way things might have been." and "Remember me once in a while. Please, promise me you'll try." are sung by Christine in different parts of the song. Near the end, Raoul also joins in singing 'Think of Me'.

The lyrics in this question are from the original soundtrack, but do not appear in the 25th Anniversary Concert version of the famous song.

After Christine finishes her performance in 'Hannibal', she returns to her rooms. The Phantom then sings to her from off-stage, "Insolent boy, this slave of fashion, basking in your glory! Ignorant fool, this brave young suitor, sharing in my triumph!"

Christine responds to him, singing, "Angel, I hear you. Speak, I listen. Stay by my side. Guide me. Angel, my soul was weak. Forgive me. Enter at last, Master."

It is at this point that the Phantom reveals himself to Christine in her mirror, and they head off into the hidden tunnels of the opera house.

During 'Phantom of the Opera', the Phantom (P) is leading Christine (C) through the opera house, down to the dungeons and his lair. It is a beautiful duet, and the end is as follows:

P: "In all your fantasies, you always knew. That man and mystery..."
C: "Were both in you."
Both: "And in this labyrinth where night is blind, the Phantom of the Opera is there..."
P: "Inside your mind." and C: "Inside my mind."
C: "He's there, the Phantom of the Opera!"
P: "Sing, my Angel of Music!"

After Christine sings, "He's there, the Phantom of the Opera!" she begins to sing a series of very high licks and runs, that ends in Christine's highest note, an E6.

The Phantom's big solo is sung in the dungeons, after he has seduced Christine into his lair. The following lyrics are not the original, but are the words that appear in the movie with Gerard Butler performing the role of the Phantom:

"Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation. Darkness stirs and wakes imagination. Silently the senses abandon their defenses. Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor. Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender. Turn your face away from the garish light of day. Turn your thoughts away from cold unfeeling light, and listen to the music of the night."

During the Phantom's solo, Christine passes out after seeing a life-size statue of herself. She wakes up in the Phantom's lair and sings 'I Remember', which is followed immediately by the duet 'Stranger Than You Dreamt It' with the Phantom. 'I Remember' begins:

"I remember there was mist...Swirling mist upon a vast, glassy lake. There were candles all around, and on the lake there was a boat. And in the boat there was a man. Who was that shape in the shadows? Whose is the face in the mask?"

She creeps up to the Phantom while she sings and quickly removes his mask, sending the Phantom into a fit of rage that starts the song 'Stranger Than You Dreamt It'.

The love song, 'All I Ask of You', is a duet between Raoul (R) and Christine (C) and is interrupted near the end by the Phantom. The lyrics below start in the middle of one of Raoul's stanzas:

R: "Say you need me with you here, beside you. Anywhere you go, let me go too. Christine, that's all I ask of you."
C: "Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime. Say the word and I will follow you."
Both: "Share each day with me, each night, each morning."

The beginning of Act 2 starts with a big masquerade ball. In the musical, the scene takes place on a giant staircase, lined with beautifully dressed dummies along the rails. The cast dance between the dummies to creating a sense that there are more dancers at the ball than there really are. The singing beginnings:

"Masquerade! Paper faces on parade. Masquerade! Hide your face so the world will never find you. Masquerade! Every face a different shade. Masquerade! Look around, there's another mask behind you."

The song 'Masquerade' is begun with the full chorus, and then breaks into individual lines sung by various cast members. When the full chorus sings again, they sing "Masquerade! Take your fill, let the spectacle astound you."

At the end of the song 'Masquerade', the Phantom arrives at the ball, and presents his new opera to the managers of the Paris Opera House. He makes his intentions clear about who he wants to play the lead female role...Christine. Later, the managers, Raoul, and the opera house's concierge, Madame Giry, devise a plan to entrap the Phantom at the premiere performance of his opera. When they try to enlist the help of Christine, she sings:

"Twisted every way, what answer can I give? Am I to risk my life to win the chance to live? Can I betray the man who once inspired my voice? Do I become his prey? Do I have any choice? He kills without a thought. He murders all that's good. I know I can't refuse, and yet, I wish I could. Oh, God, if I agree, what horrors wait for me, in this, the Phantom's opera?"

Answer: No backward glances.

During the performance of his opera, the Phantom hangs the male lead, Piangi, and disguises himself in Piangi's costume. He enters onto the stage, pretending to be Piangi, and sings with Christine. Some of the Phantom's lines are as follows:

"Past the point of no return. No backward glances. Our games of make-believe are at an end. Past all thought of 'if' or 'when'. No use resisting. Abandon thought and let the dream descend."

Christine slowly figures out that the man she is performing with is not Piangi, and she removes the Phantom's cloak, mask, and wig, for all to see. The Phantom, angry, steals away with Christine, back down to the dungeons below the Paris Opera House.

The final song of the musical is 'Down Once More/Track Down This Murderer', which takes place in the Phantom's lair. 'Down Once More' is sung by the Phantom, Raoul, and Christine. As the Phantom drags Christine down to the dungeons with him, he sings:

"Down once more to the dungeons of my black despair! Down we plunge to the prison of my mind. Down that path into darkness deep as hell! Why, you ask, was I bound and chained in this cold and dismal place. Not for any mortal sin, but the wickedness of my abhorrent face!"

The Phantom then hears the patrons of the opera house coming down through the tunnels and appeals to Christine. "No compassion anywhere!" is sung by the Phantom during his appeal to Christine. Raoul then appears in the dungeon to rescue Christine, and almost loses his life, before the Phantoms lets them both leave in a final act of mercy.

The last time the Phantom is seen, he sits down in his high-backed chair and covers himself with his cloak. When Meg Giry, Christine's friend, appears in the dungeon, she removes the cloak from the chair to find only the Phantom's mask beneath it. The disappearance of the Phantom is perhaps the greatest piece of stage magic from the musical. As the lights dim and the performance ends, Meg hold up the Phantom's mask for the audience to see.
