The novel, "Anna and the King of Siam" by Margaret Landon, was the source material used as the basis of this musical. When the original Broadway production opened on March 29, 1951, the part of Anna was played by Gertrude Lawrence and the king by Yul Brynner. When the show was made into a movie Yul Brynner kept the part of the king but the role of Anna was played by Deborah Kerr.

Based on the true story of the Von Trapp family, who escaped from Austria to the U.S. at the start of World War II, the musical had Mary Martin for its leading lady on Broadway. The film version was released in 1965 with Julie Andrews as Maria.

In 2006 Andrew Lloyd Webber presided over a revival of the show at the London Palladium. This time the leading lady was selected by way of an eight week television show during which time the public had a vote in the casting of the part. The role was won by a young lady called Connie Fisher.
