Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the Trojan War, I was the most valiant fighter on the Trojan side. After killing Patroclus, I was myself killed by the champion of the Greeks, Achilles. Who am I?

Answer: Hector

I'm Hector, the first of the Nine Worthies: a set of nine men who were said to represent the ultimate chivalrous warriors. The concept was created by Frenchman Jacques de Longuyon in 1312 and became a popular touchstone among literate society for the next few hundred years.

The Nine Worthies were divided into three triads: the good pagans, the good Jews and the good Christians. I am one of the three good pagans (you'll meet the other two soon!). My brother Paris initiated the Trojan War and eventually avenged my death by shooting Achilles in his one weak point: his heel.
2. When I saw the breadth of my empire, I wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer. Born in Macedon, I inherited the throne at the age of 20 after my father was assassinated. I went on to conquer the Persian Empire, Egypt and even got as far as India before I died under suspicious circumstances. Who am I?

Answer: Alexander the Great

I'm Alexander the Great, a man never defeated in battle who had already become one of the greatest conquerors the ancient world had ever seen when I died at 32. Noble in victory, I tried to encourage harmony within my realm, and often adopted customs of other cultures that I deemed to hold virtue - much to the chagrin of my own people.
3. The last of the three good pagans, I came after Hector and Alexander chronologically and won great military victories for the Roman Republic. Like both of my peers I died an unnatural death, stabbed to death in the senate. Who am I?

Answer: Julius Caesar

After my death, the republic quickly fell apart, with my adopted heir Octavian assuming power as the first emperor of Rome, taking the regnal name Augustus.
4. I took charge of the Israelites after Moses died on the long road to Canaan - a land which, incidentally, I conquered for the chosen people. The first of the three good Jews, who am I?

Answer: Joshua

I am the humble and wise - but also kick-ass - Joshua, who, according to the bible, passed away at the ripe old age of 110.
5. I earned my place among the Nine Worthies because of my great martial skill, evidenced even when I was a mere lad. However, I also had Bathsheba's husband murdered so I could marry her, proving that you can be a snake in the sack and still be thought great as long as you are successful in war. Who am I?

Answer: David

Yes, I am King David, bane of the Philistines, famed for killing the giant Goliath. My life was one of mixed blessings, for though I had great success in battle, one of those victories claimed the life of my rebellious son Absalom, whose death I mourned despite his treachery.
6. I'm probably the least famous of the three good Jews that make up the Nine Worthies, and yet it's my success as leader of the Jewish forces during the revolt against the Seleucid Empire that Hanukkah celebrates - thanks to my brilliance, we took Jerusalem and rededicated the Second Temple. Who am I?

Answer: Judas Maccabeus

Of course, my notoriety as leader of the revolt meant I was public enemy number one. The Seleucids sent an enormous army against me, but rather than run I bravely stood my ground. And was killed.
7. Now we come to the final trio of worthies, the three good Christians. I'm the most mythical of the bunch, pulling my first sword from a stone, getting my second one from a lake and eventually dying at the hands of my own son. Who am I?

Answer: King Arthur

You've probably heard of my round table, where noble knights sat in perfect equality. Unfortunately, some knights seemed to think that also entitled them to bed my wife (I'm looking at you, Lancelot). Despite my noble mien I lost the woman I loved and died a tragic death.
8. King of the Franks they used to call me. Before I became the first Holy Roman Emperor that is. I'm also sometimes known as the Father of Europe - does that help you guess who I am?

Answer: Charlemagne

Under my reign, Western Europe once again was drawn together after centuries of disunity. I also greatly reformed the church, hoping to strengthen and purify it.
9. Last (and probably also least) of all, I'm not as worshiped today as my fellow Nine Worthies. But when the concept was created, I was a shining star in the Christian heavens; the man who breached the walls of Jerusalem and brought the First Crusade to a successful conclusion. Who am I?

Answer: Godfrey of Bouillon

Like Charlemagne I was a Frank, though rather than rule the Holy Roman Empire I ruled the Kingdom of Jerusalem. I didn't get to enjoy my position for long though, dying just a year after attaining it.
10. Now you've met the men Medieval Europe deemed most admirable. However, there is one fictional Spaniard who thought himself nobler than any of them, proving his valor by tilting at windmills. Can you name the eponymous hero who says he is greater than "all the Nine Worthies, since my achievements surpass all that they have done all together and each of them on his own account"?

Answer: Don Quixote

Cervantes' masterpiece is regularly named as one of the greatest novels of all time. "Don Quixote" introduced me to the romantic - if slightly arbitrary - notion of the Nine Worthies, and for that I owe the knight-errant a boon!
