1. Where did Theseus grow up?

Answer: Troezen

Theseus lived in Troezen with his mother and grandfather until he was sixteen, when he set out on his journey to Athens.
2. Who was Theseus' father?

Answer: King Aegeas

King Aegeus of Athens was his father and his mother was Aethra. However, in some versions of the story, the god Poseidon is his true father.
3. On his journey to Athens, Theseus met the robber Periphetes. How did Periphetes kill passing travellers?

Answer: Beating them with a metal club

When he encountered Periphetes, Theseus took the metal club away from him and killed him with it.
4. Another robber that Theseus encountered was Sciron, who used to push travelers into the sea where they would be eaten by what creature?

Answer: A carnivorous turtle

Sciron was situated on a narrow path on the edge of a mountain called 'The Bad Step'. He would make travelers wash his feet in return for letting them pass. As they did this he would push them off the edge and into the sea where they would be eaten by a carnivorous turtle.
5. When Theseus reached Athens, who tried to poison him?

Answer: Medea

King Aegeas' wife Medea persuaded him to try to kill Theseus after realising the threat he posed. Luckily, Aegeas realised that Theseus was in fact his son and stopped him from drinking it.
6. Why did Theseus want to be one of the human sacrifices to the Minotaur?

Answer: To kill it

The Minotaur was a vicious, half man, half bull monster that lived in the labyrinth in Crete. Every year, the people of Crete would have to feed the beast several humans who would be locked inside the labyrinth, never to be seen again.
7. What did Ariadne, the daughter of Minos, give to Theseus in order to help him find his way out of the labyrinth?

Answer: A ball of thread

She gave Theseus a ball of thread. She told him to tie one end to the entrance and unwind it as he went. This way he could follow it back to the entrance after killing the beast.
8. How did Theseus kill the Minotaur?

Answer: With a sword

There are two versions to how Theseus killed the Minotaur. One version states that he killed the Minotaur with his bare hands while another version says that he killed the beast with a sword given to him by Ariadne.
9. Where did Theseus abandon Ariadne?

Answer: Naxos

Ariadne only helped Theseus if he promised to take her to Athens with him and marry her. Theseus however, decided he did not feel as strongly about marriage as she did and set sail without her. According to some versions, this was under instructions from Dionysus, who wanted to wed her himself.
10. How did King Aegeas die?

Answer: He threw himself off a cliff

The king of Athens threw himself off a cliff after seeing Theseus' boat sailing back with black sails. Theseus had promised before he left that if he had survived, his ship would be sailing white sails. Aegeas assumed his son was dead and killed himself. The sea he fell into has been called the Aegean sea ever since.
