Men and Gods Trivia Questions

1. Hyperion is Eos' father. Who is her mother?

From Quiz
Greek Mythology: Eos and Her Lovers

Answer: Theia

Theia (sometimes called Euryphaessa) is one of the daughters of Uranus, god of the Sky and Gaia, goddess of the Earth. Hyperion is her brother and husband. Theia is the Greek goddess of sight, said to have given all jewels and precious gems their sparkle. The son of Uranus and Gaia, Hyperion was the god of light, watchfulness and intelligence. Eos was born into the second generations of Titans, the gods that the Ancient Greeks worshiped as the gods of nature.

2. Who was the mother of Phaethon?

From Quiz Does the Sun Have a Son?

Answer: Clymene

Clymene was one of three thousand Oceanids who were the nymph daughters of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys. She was loved by the sun god Helios and bore him his son Phaethon although she was married to Merops, the king of Aethiopia.

3. The titan Prometheus risked the anger of the gods to bring humans a very special gift. What did he steal from the gods?

From Quiz It's Always Darkest Before the Dawn

Answer: Fire

Prometheus was tasked by Zeus with creating a race of humans, after the Golden Race - the original humans - died out and their successors, the Silver Race, were imprisoned in Tartarus. He created the Bronze Race, humans who resembled the gods. Prometheus was fond of his creations and helped settle a dispute over which parts of a sacrificed bull to give to Zeus by putting its bones in a bag, with a few nice bits of meat on top. Zeus retaliated for the trick by refusing to give humans fire, but Prometheus stole it from the gods and hid it in a fennel stalk, and taught humans how to use it. The gods were not too happy about this and punished Prometheus by chaining him to a rock and having an eagle eat his liver, which would regrow so he would have to suffer all over again. The hero Heracles rescued Prometheus many years later and killed the eagle. Meanwhile, humans used their new gift to cook food, keep warm and forge tools.

4. Pan, the Greek god of nature, has the legs and horns of what animal?

From Quiz Pan: The Lustful Greek God of Nature

Answer: goat

Pan has been typically depicted as having the horns, hindquarters and legs of a goat with the upper body of a human male. His appearance is similar to a satyr. Pan was also the god of hunters, shepherds, forests and mountain wilds. He spent much time and effort chasing nymphs with mixed results. The word "pan" can likely be traced to an old Arcadian word for rustic. Some sources, including the website "mythagora", suggest the gods gave Pan his name, because it means "All".

5. According to legend, which kingdom was ruled by King Midas?

From Quiz Tales of the Touch of Gold

Answer: Phrygia

Although the legendary kings of Phrygia are a topic of stories in Greek mythology, there was an ancient kingdom of Phrygia that was located in Anatolia. Historians also believe there was at least one historic King Midas, who ruled Phrygia in the 8th century BC when the kingdom was at the peak of its power. He is believed, however, to have committed suicide when his capital city was pillaged by the Cimmerians. Over time the area of Phrygia became part of a succession of ancient empires, including Lydia, Persia, Macedonia, and Rome.

6. According to the Greek historians, what ritual were teenaged Amazons subjected to, presumably to make it easier to fight?

From Quiz Heroes and Amazons

Answer: Burning or cutting off their right breast

It was reported that the right breast was removed (seared or cut off) to make it easier to throw a spear or wield a bow without hindrance(!) Clearly the ancient artists and sculptors didn't agree, as they portrayed the women as beautiful and intact (apart from the odd war wound). According to some reports, some women sported decorative tattoos, but there was no mention of the other two options in the versions I have read. I know a couple of very good women archers, and they appear to have retained both boobs without loss of aim.

7. Who is the Greek goddess of the rainbow?

From Quiz Greek Mythology

Answer: Iris

The Greek goddess Iris governed the rainbow. Her name is now bestowed upon a brightly and variously colored flower.

8. Oedipus was raised in Corinth by which king and queen?

From Quiz The Cruel Fate of King Oedipus

Answer: Polybus and Merope

Oedipus' more famous parents weren't the Corinthian ones who raised him, as they proved far less relevant to his fate. However, his relationship with his adoptive parents was very important and led to his return and re-introduction to the land of his birth.

9. According to Greek mythology, Nyx has only one parent - and not a normal one. She came from Chaos - what (or who) is "Chaos"?

From Quiz Nyx - Goddess of the Night

Answer: An empty state that existed before the universe's creation

Chaos features in many Greek creation myths - it is quite hard to classify it as anything but was supposedly a state of nothingness preceding the cosmos. It had two children: Erebus and Nyx, although how it could have children (especially without a second being involved is a mystery.
