Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the bacterium responsible for dysentery.

Answer: shigella

Don't you think 'shigella' sounds more like a shimmery '60s dance than a nasty little bug? It seems much too cute a word to belong to something so unpleasant!
2. Here's one that means "giving permission to go".

Answer: dimissory

It really looks as if it should have a 'dis' prefix. But it doesn't, I'm afraid. (The word dismissory does, and has the same meaning.)
3. This is a type of old-fashioned, horse-driven carriage. Just a small one, but a small one with a strange name.

Answer: brougham

'Brougham' is pronounced like 'broo-um'. English is such an odd language!
4. This small deer from South-East Asia makes a sound reminiscent of a bark, and thus gets referred to commonly as the 'barking deer'.

Answer: muntjac

I wonder if any South-East Asian dogs have ever been confused by this deer using their sound.
5. This is an item used for fastening things to a horse's back.

Answer: surcingle

I'm not entirely sure just how versatile a surcingle is. Somewhere in the world, there's bound to be some people who have unsuccessfully tried to use one to attach more oddly shaped things to their horses. "Blast this useless surcingle! Now how will we ever get the new kitchen sink home?"
6. Next up, a rectangular pillar which both projects from and supports a wall.

Answer: pilaster

A little marvel of architecture, perplexing architects attempting to spell it for years now. Surely the double-L of 'pillar' should be in there somewhere? No, evidently not.
7. A dweller on the earth can be referred to as a ...

Answer: tellurian

We are all tellurians. Your pet lizard is both a tellurian AND a 'terrarian' (if there was such a word). :D
8. A person who reacts strongly to visual impressions can be described as being ...?

Answer: visile

If you're the kind of person who needs to see something, rather than just hear about it, to fully understand, you're visile. (Note: this is an obsolete term. It has been replaced in common usage with the word "visual".)
9. A head cold. Seems simple, right?

Answer: coryza

Almost nobody seems to know this word, but it could be so handy. "Oh, I'm so sorry, but I can't come in to work for ... oh, I'm not sure. You see, I have the dreaded ... coryza! It's very infectious, too. I'd better stay home for everybody's sake."
10. It's fantastic! Amazing! Oh, wow, I can't believe it - another word for hyperbole! Whoo!!

Answer: auxesis

Thanks for playing my quiz! Please feel free to use all the auxesis you like if you enjoyed it. ;-D
