Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1. To replace, take the place or position of. 2. To displace in favor of another : SUPPLANT. Can you identify and spell this word correctly?

Answer: supersede

Yes, interestingly enough, the suffix is not the typical -ceed, such as in suceed, or -cede, such as in precede, but with the -sede. Fortunately enough, it is the only word in our language possessing such a quality.
2. A person who writes plays. Can you identify and spell this word correctly?

Answer: playwright

Those who play right are right-players, not playwrights. Well, since they write plays, they should be "play-writes," right? Wrong. A play writer in Old English was called a "play worker", and "wright" is from an old form of "work" (as in "wrought iron", etc.). Compare with "to wreak havoc".
3. A period of a thousand years. Can you identify and spell this word correctly?

Answer: millennium

A double "l" and a double "n" is found in "millennium". How unusual!
4. 1. An illicit intimate relationship. 2. Communication for maintaining mutual understanding and cooperation (as between parts of an armed force). What is this word?

Answer: liaison

Derived from French, an extra "i" is evident in "liaison", thrown in directly before the "s". It is silent, to top everything off.
5. To treat someone with a vaccine to produce immunity against a disease. Also, to introduce an infective agent into an organism. What is this word?

Answer: inoculate

What happened to the other "n" in "inoculate"? Tricky!
6. Items and physical resources providing a person or group (such as an expedition) with all the essentials that it needs. Can you identify and spell this word correctly?

Answer: equipment

Believe it or not, "equipment" is spelled incorrectly on the web as "equiptment" about 25,000 times!
7. The leading sheep of a flock, with a bell on its neck. What is this word?

Answer: bellwether

No "weather" is part of a "bellwether".
8. To dry out something completely, usually when preserving it: to DEHYDRATE. What is this word?

Answer: desiccate

A mere single "s", but two "c"s? I'm starting to despise the English language more and more!
9. A violation of something which is sacred in religion. What is this noun that rhymes with "privilege"?

Answer: sacrilege

No wonder "sacrilegious" isn't any part of "religious"! (Okay, sorry, excuse that pathetic attempt at a pun).
10. A Caribbean cocktail containing rum and lime juice, popular in the U.S. and Europe. Can you identify and spell this word correctly?

Answer: daiquiri

Also the name of a Cuban village, and somehow three "i"s slipped into "daiquiri". Check your wine glass next time you have one!
