Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pill peddler:

Answer: Sawbones

Sawbones, pill-pusher etc, all terms for doctors. The snake oil merchant sold his wares from a travelling stand, now we have infomercials! Ooops.
2. Pot slinger:

Answer: Short order cook

This one is pretty clear. Though I have seen a great circus act with a skillet and two eggs.
3. Powder puff:

Answer: Cautious boxer

4. Sawdust eater:

Answer: Lumberjack or millworker

I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok...sorry couldn't resist. Just watch out for those little owls.
5. Solid sender:

Answer: Swinging musician

This means 'baby you really send me...'
6. Squirrel:

Answer: Psychiatrist

Now think about that one...I found it was used even as early as the fifties and then gradually became replaced by shrink.
7. Ten-percenter:

Answer: Actor's agent

Obviously for their commission of ten percent at that time. Probably more now. Gallery owners get about 40 percent!
8. Rug merchant:

Answer: Spy

This is because they used to claim they were business people and thus 'rug merchants'..just any old merchandise.
9. Wind-jammer:

Answer: Brass player

They jam with wind, I guess. This was used in bands for the circus, jazz etc.
10. Mr. Whiskers:

Answer: The US govt. and its agents

This was used to refer to the IRS, FBI and in general any US authority, as Uncle Sam had whiskers!
