Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following mountain ranges is the Yeti believed to inhabit?

Answer: The Himalayas

The mythological beast known as the Yeti, is/was believed to inhabit the higher regions of the Himalayan Mountain range. The Yeti is often linked with other mythological beasts such as Bigfoot, Sasquatch and the Skunk Ape. Although a part of the local culture and their mythology, the possibility of this creature being real is of great interest to those involved in the field of cryptozoology also.
2. The Yeti is part of which peoples' mythology?

Answer: The Sherpa

The Sherpa are one of the indigenous cultures found in the Himalayas. They are known as very skilled mountaineers and make their homes in some of the highest altitudes on Earth. The legend of the Yeti varies from village to village but remains basically the same.

They believe the Yeti is a bipedal hominid, that is very shy. It is usually not dangerous, but when threatened has the strength to kill a man. He is described as tall with long dark hair and a strong smell. Some tribes regard him as semi-divine.
3. New Zealand mountaineer, Sir Edmund Hillary, was very vocal in his claim that he saw the Yeti in 1953, when he climbed Mount Everest.

Answer: False

Hillary claimed that he and his companion Tenzig Norgay saw large unidentified footprints while climbing the mountain. He never claimed to have seen Yeti and believed the prints to be from an animal that he was not familiar with. He found most reported sightings to be unreliable. This opinion was seconded by Tenzig Norgay in his second autobiography.
4. In 1959, which American actor is believed to have smuggled a Yeti artifact, known as the Panboche Hand, out of India?

Answer: Jimmy Stewart

This artifact, which was smuggled out of India by Jimmy Stewart and his wife, turned out to be an actual human finger. This was discovered many years later after the advent of DNA testing. The finger was from a hand that had been venerated for years in a religious temple and was believed to be the hand of a Yeti. All the other options were not Americans, they were from the beautiful country of Canada.
5. Which of the following best describes the reported diet of the Yeti?

Answer: Omnivore

According to legend the Yeti would be considered an omnivore. He has been described as eating berries, grass, leaves, and many varieties of animals. This would make sense if this animal is related to humans or or one of the local bear species.
6. In which country would you find the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, a wildlife sanctuary that is dedicated, in part, to protecting the Yeti?

Answer: Bhutan

The Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the mountains of Bhutan and is dedicated to preserving the local wildlife. This includes the Migoi, which is a yeti-like cryptid. There are many different names for the Yeti including Miche, Dzuteh, Mirka and Kang-Admi. While the names vary by region, the idea remains the same.
7. Which of the following actions has the Yeti NOT been rumored to do?

Answer: Sing and dance

The Yeti and its brethren have been rumored to do all of these things except sing and dance. He is reported to be able to kill a man with a single punch, is believed to walk on two feet and is said to be nocturnal in nature. The Yeti is reported to have many vocalizations as locals believe many of the animal calls heard at night are coming from the Yeti.

There are no reports of this beast singing and dancing.
8. The word Yeti comes from the Tibetan word yeh-teh, which translates into English as which of the following?

Answer: Rock bear

The name Yeti translates as rock bear. Some of the other names for this mytholocical beast translate as follows: Miche= man bear, Dzu-teh= cattle bear, Migoi= wild man, and Kand-Admi= snow man. These names just reinforce the basic description of this beast, just in different languages.
9. Which major world religion is associated with the Yeti?

Answer: Buddhism

Many artifacts that are revered as parts of a real Yeti are found in Buddhist temples. Skulls, hands, pelts thought to be from a Yeti can be found in these high mountain retreats. Most scientific studies that have been allowed on these artifacts have determined that they are from indigenous species such as the Himalayan brown bear, the Tibetan blue bear or the odd looking Himalayan goral.

Some of the animals that have been suggested can sometimes stand on their back feet but are usually considered to be quadrupeds.

There are those who wonder if it is a surviving group of ancient hominids such as Gigantopithecus or Neanderthal.
10. In 2009 the Nepalese government admitted to the world that the Yeti did not and never had existed.

Answer: False

This is completely false. The countries of the Himalayan mountains may use the Yeti legend to pull in tourism dollars, but many of the local people still believe the beast to be real. As with many cryptids, it is unknown whether this beast is or was a real animal. Most mountain cultures around the world have legends of large, hairy man-like beasts that prowl at night. Are these just echos of distant memories of now-extinct hominids, are they real creatures that still live, or are they simply myth? You decide.
